Selling Your Home? Don’t Let the Mess Steal the Showing

Selling your home means getting ready for house showings, sometimes with barely enough time to clear the kitchen counter. Home staging helps, but buyers also need to see the space without stepping over laundry or wondering what that smell is.

Nobody expects a home where people live to look untouched. But buyers should remember your floor plan, not last night’s fish dinner.

Before a showing, focus on four things that make a difference.

1. Grab a “Scout Basket”

Keep a large lidded basket or bin ready for loose toys, mail, and everyday clutter. When time is short, gather those items and put the bin somewhere secure and out of the way.

Protect medications, valuables, and documents containing personal information. Buyers may open closets and cabinets, so stuffing everything behind the nearest door isn’t much of a strategy.

You’re clearing distractions, not concealing damage or blocking access.

2. Hit the High-Impact Zones

Start with the front entry, kitchen, and bathrooms.

  • Sweep the porch and straighten the welcome mat.

  • Clear and wipe kitchen counters and the sink.

  • Clean bathroom surfaces, put out fresh towels, and close toilet lids.

  • Remove trash and clear walking paths.

If time remains, straighten beds and living areas.

Buyers need room to notice the house. Your countertop does not need to display every appliance you have ever loved.

3. Handle Odors at the Source

Heavy fragrance layered over pet smells usually creates two smells having an argument.

Empty trash cans, clean litter boxes, wash pet bedding and linens, and address spills. Ventilate when weather and security allow.

Aim for neutral air rather than adding candles, simmer pots, or strong sprays. Persistent musty or sewage odors may signal a problem that needs professional attention.

A pleasant scent cannot repair the source of an unpleasant one.

4. Bring in Help When Needed

If cleaning has become overwhelming, ask a local cleaning service about availability for a pre-showing or move-out clean. Explain your deadline and priorities before booking.

Professional help can handle scrubbing while you focus on getting the home ready and coordinating with your agent.

Make the House Easier to See

The goal is a clean, accessible home where buyers can focus on the space and its condition.

Clutter can distract them. Odors can raise questions. Cleaning won’t guarantee an offer, but it removes avoidable obstacles.
