Project: Selective Traps Against the Asian Hornet 🐝🪰
The Asian hornet poses a threat to our bees, to fruit cultivation, and can create unsafe situations. This invasive species often builds nests in places like garden sheds and playhouses, with all the consequences that entails.
As a beekeeper, I see firsthand the impact this has on nature and our environment. That’s why I want to take action by developing selective traps with a 3D printer. These traps are specially designed to capture queen hornets in the spring, without harming other insects. Each captured queen can prevent a completely new nest from forming in the summer, which could contain hundreds of worker hornets.
Time is critical: capturing queens in the spring is most effective. The more traps are in use at that time, the greater the impact.
For production, I deliberately choose PET-G, a durable and weather-resistant material. This makes the traps suitable for long-term outdoor use, though it is more expensive than standard filament. I also focus on quality over quantity: I prefer 10 effective and durable traps rather than 100 less effective ones.
