Flash Fiction #3 - Cinnamon and Salt

Feb 08, 2026

Here is the third look into my Fantasy world and the characters that call it home.

“Do you see anything? Anyone suspicious or disappearing behind the curtains or into one of the back rooms?” asked Cinnamon. She was dancing close to her sister, both bodies moving fluidly in a way that showed off how flexible they were.

Moving closer, in order to hear amid the loud music, Salt shook her head. “Nope. No one.” They twirled, hooking hands and switching positions. It was their own style, a dance they’d devised that would keep people looking at their limbs rather than at where their eyes were focused.

It was late, far later than they knew they should be out when they had Saturday makeup classes to get to the next morning. Still, they didn’t leave for the dorms. Instead they continued to dance. Sisters, they attended the Culpepper Academy, though their own powers had barely begun to manifest. Friday nights they could often be found running around town. Literally. They ran just about everywhere, even seen jogging short distances when no doubt walking would have sufficed. Interested in just about everything strange and otherworldly that happened in Briartown they were notorious notetakers, keeping the information they gathered organized and secret. Most of the supernatural entities and magical creatures that lived in the town kept their heritage private, even most of the professors and a good portion of the students, so they had to be observant and sneaky, which they were very good at, to get some of their intelligence. Their blossoming abilities made that easier, of course, but they were still fickle.

Becoming invisible only helped if when you became visible was under your control.

Each of the girls carried a backpack with them at all times, slung over their backs and secured shut with powerful magnets. Their tablets, which housed their digital information, were connected via cord to the inside tarp-like fabric so even if someone were to breach the opening and reach inside to try and snatch the tech away, they wouldn’t succeed. They were smart, too, because whenever they got the chance they copied over their information twice over, keeping each copy in a different location.

So it was that they danced and laughed, their movements wild and carefree to the loud music at Vivacious, the local nightclub. Rumor around town was that in the club there was a secret entrance that led to an entirely different club below, one you had to be not only invited into but initiated into as well. It was that place the pair really wanted to see but they weren’t sure what the requirements were, what they had to be or do to be considered for admittance.

That didn’t stop them from trying.

“Hey! Sis! There..” said Salt, gesturing with her head and eyes. She didn’t dare point. Her sister didn’t pause, not even for a moment, continuing with the twirl and gyrating moves. Their dance was sensual yet playful and a few of the dancers nearby stopped to watch. Further back people merely moved out of the way but kept on dancing.

“I see it. That curtain. Those people. I recognize one of them from the college. One of the professors,” replied Cinnamon.

“Yep. And I caught a peak behind that curtain months ago. There wasn’t a visible doorway and there wasn’t enough space back there to hold how many just went in there. That must be it.” The two shared a look, quiet surrounding them even as the entire room was full of music and voices and many bodies moving in and out of rhythm.

“It must be. But, I think we better get out of here. We might have messed up somehow because one of those guys from the corner… is coming our way.” Cinnamon danced to the left and laughed as if her sister had said something funny. Salt replied with her own laugh and immediately stopped dancing, but not moving. A few steps left, and a couple swerves around a dancer or two and she was closer to the exit.

The lights were dim in the center of the room but the edges were lit by bright LED’s in varying hues of blue. Near the entrance the light was a yellow that faded the further you went in. That was where they had to go. Neither of them wanted to be questioned. So making it look as if they were just bored and ready to go, the two of them linked arms and nearly skipped towards the door. As much as they wanted to look behind them, to know they’d put distance between them and the employees of Vivacious, they didn’t. Instead they laughed again and pretended to chat happily until they slipped out into the dark of night.

Once outside they took off at a run. Cinnamon took the natural lead, Salt only a few steps behind her. Though dressed in club outfits, short skirts with leggings and low cut tops with long gloves, they were still outfits they could run in. Tight busts and slit skirts made them more than adequate. They’d been chosen and modified specifically for it. Better to be prepared than caught in inadequate clothing for a quick getaway.

Salt swore. They’d have to let the heat cool down now, stay away long enough for the guards to hopefully forget about them. Hopefully their dancing and outfits were all they would remember because that, that they could change.

With frustrated huffs but smiles nonetheless, the twins disappeared into the night, already pondering their next escapade.
