20 Minute Crochet Bookmark- Written Pattern for New Beginners

Jul 11, 2023

If you're looking for an easy to follow pattern that's worked up quickly and perfect for NEW beginners, you will love love love my Rocky Road Crochet Bookmark Pattern!

You just need a handful of yarn and about 20 minutes for 1 bookmark. You can crochet several bookmarks from 1 skein of yarn in just 1 evening, making these quick, easy, and beautiful bookmarks the perfect project to take anywhere! Crochet a few to add to gift sets, use as stocking stuffers, or sell at markets. Another fun idea would be to use specific colors for themed bookmarks. For example, crochet gold and burgundy stripes for a Harry Potter book, just like your favorite wizard's scarf! Or use your favorite team colors!

You don't need to know how to read a pattern to follow the written instructions. The directions are written like I'm talking to a friend, so it's super easy to follow, but you'll still learn the format of a pattern. There is a YouTube Tutorial accompanying the pattern that you can watch here.

Once you learn how to crochet these bookmarks, you'll also be on your way to crocheting beautiful dishcloths, potholders, and dish scrubbies- all from the same pattern. In fact, you can use it to crochet anything that is a rectangle or a square. One of my very ambitious YouTube subscribers crocheted the most beautiful scarf using this bookmark pattern!

Tag @withloveleisha on YT and IG to share your projects with me and show other beginners how easy it is to crochet beautiful things!

Pattern

Make a slip knot any way you like.

Ch 8. Add 1 more for a turning ch. You will have 9 chs total.

Row 1: Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, place 1 sc in every ch.

You should have 8 sts at the end of the row (or 1 less than your total # of chs).

Ch 1 and tighten. This will give you a smooth edge. Turn your work.

How to identify your chains: The loop on your hook doesn’t count as a ch. The 1st ch is the one next to the loop on your hook. If you look at your foundation ch, you’ll see Vs. Each V is 1 ch.

Let’s Add Some Texture!

Row 2: Sc in the 1st st (it’s next to your ch 1). Edc in the next st. Sc in the next st. Continue alternating sc and edc to the end of the row.

Last st should be an edc. Count your sts. Ch 1 and tighten. Turn.

To see your sts better: Tilt your work towards you. The Vs along the top are the tops of your sts. Each V is 1 st. The last st will look a little weird. Tilt your work so you can see the side edge - you’ll find your last V there.

Row 3: Repeat Row 2 until the project is desired length. I did 19 rows including my 1st row of sc. The 1st st is always a sc. Last st is always an edc. Remember: ch 1 and tighten before you turn.

Note: you’re placing a sc in the edc from the row below, and an edc in the sc from below.

If you’re having trouble seeing the top of your edc, tilt your work towards you, it will be almost on the back side of your work.

Last Row: Sc in every st. Count your sts!

I crocheted 20 rows total.

Knot off and Weave in your ends. I've shown this step in the video and detailed it in the paid pattern, along with a neat hack for counting your rows!

Troubleshooting:

If your 1st and last row seem tighter than your textured rows, try going up a hook size for the foundation chain, and 1st and last row only.

You Did It!

Now pat yourself on the back and enjoy your bookmarks!

Try this pattern for other items- it looks gorgeous! Take lots of pictures and tag me so other beginners can see that they too can crochet beautiful things!

Until next time, keep crocheting with Love and Patience my friend.
