The Hustle & Bust(le) Season

The Hustle & Bust(le) Season

Dec 18, 2025

I stopped buying “the holiday season.”

And I mean that literally, too. This didn’t happen all at once or just this year. A couple of years ago, I started slowly pulling back. I began noticing how much of my participation in December was driven by obligation rather than intention. The spending, the gifting, the pressure to compress thoughtfulness into a single month because the calendar said so.

Over time, I chose differently. I leaned more into quality time, presence, and simplicity. I found myself wanting to give more intentionally throughout the year, when something genuinely reminded me of someone, instead of forcing meaning into one prescribed season.

Not because I’m anti-joy or anti-celebration, but because somewhere along the way it stopped feeling natural. The pressure to consume more, do more, gather more, perform more happiness all while the light is fading and the body is asking for rest started to feel off.

Over the last few years, because of the inner work I’ve done, the time I’ve spent in nature, and the way I’ve slowly pulled myself out of conditioning and autopilot, I’ve started to see some of the things we’ve been sold a little more clearly. Not from a place of judgment, but from awareness.

The reality is once you spend enough time walking, listening, and observing seasons instead of schedules, certain patterns become hard to ignore.

So I listened. I stepped back from the hustle and bustle not out of resistance, but out of discernment. December didn’t feel like a time to push or prove anything. It felt like a time to soften, to protect energy, to let things be quieter than usual. And once I allowed that, I realized how counterintuitive the whole structure has become.

We ask ourselves and our nervous systems to sprint at the very moment nature is slowing everything down. But do we ever ask why?

Then January arrives, and I feel the pull again. I want to be so honest about this part, because even with all of this awareness, I still notice how easy it is to slip back into old rhythms depending on the circles I’m in and the conversations we’re having. Especially when we’re talking about business, productivity, or goals. The calendar year creeps in. The pressure to “start” in January resurfaces. It’s familiar. It’s conditioned. And it’s powerful.

But the more I sit with it, the more I remember that January as a beginning isn’t actually a natural cycle. It’s a human one. Rooted in Roman governance and administrative systems, not in seasons, bodies, or biology. Nature doesn’t reset in January. It rests. It integrates. It conserves.

So January doesn’t feel like a beginning to me. It feels like a landing. A time to orient rather than execute. To check in before deciding what’s next. My energy right now isn’t meant for big declarations or rigid plans. It’s meant for recalibration.

What I’m learning is that January supports reflection more than resolution.

I’m not sharing this to convince anyone of anything, but to invite a pause. To invite you to notice how you actually feel in your body right now. What feels natural. What feels like you’re going against the grain. Where you’re moving because it feels aligned and true to you, and where you might be moving out of habit.

I’m choosing a different relationship with this time of year. One that honors biology over busyness and seasons over inherited timelines.

If January feels slow, heavy, or unclear for you, I don’t think that’s something to fix. I think it might be information worth listening to.

I’ll be ready to spring up when spring arrives 🌷
