The Redemptive Cup of Coffee (Blue Peter Edition)

FRIDAY FOOD TRAIL — 28 November 2025

✍️ Riaan M. Odendaal

There are coffees that wake you.
There are coffees that steady you.
And then there is a third kind —
the cup that doesn’t need to be good
to be redemptive.

That cup lives at the Blue Peter.

Average beans.
Average brew.
But the view does all the work:
the ocean stretching itself open,
the line of Robben Island in the distance,
and Table Mountain standing like a witness
to every version of your life you’ve lived so far.

Some places become part of your biography
without ever asking permission.

I took my first steps on the beach in front of the Blue Peter —
11 months old and walking
before I understood what walking meant.

I learned to swim in that same strip of water —
salt stinging my eyes,
waves teaching me the rhythm
of surrender and return.

And decades later, I stood there again —
this time asking a woman to marry me.
She said yes.
Life later said otherwise.
But the place didn’t lose its meaning.
Some memories don’t need to be repaired
to remain sacred.

So today I sat with that average cup of coffee,
and it did what only that coastline can do:
it returned me to myself.

The ritual.
The salt.
The wind that never apologises.
The table where your breath catches up with you.
The view that reminds you
how much of your life began right here
before you knew what beginning meant.

Some cups are for the day.
This one is for the soul.

And if they ask…
tell them Riaan sent you —
not for the coffee,
but for the remembering.
