The Daily Verdict began as a place to write things down before they disappeared.

Not the large events.

The smaller things.

The second cup of coffee poured by habit.

A petrol station pie after midnight.

The silence inside institutions.

What remains after people leave.

What still works when the performance ends.

I’m Riaan M. Odendaal.

By profession, I am an accountant and tax practitioner.

By temperament, a writer.

Somewhere between the two, this page was built.

Over the past few years, The Daily Verdict became a ledger of observations:

part poetry,

part witness statement,

part roadside sign for people trying to make sense of modern life without losing their humanity in the process.

In 2025, Rotary International named me Poet of the Year.

I remain grateful for that honour.

But most days still look ordinary:

coffee growing cold beside spreadsheets,

WhatsApp messages arriving too early,

deadlines,

lighthouses,

food trails,

boardrooms,

quiet conversations,

and the ongoing work of becoming someone truthful.

This page is not built for slogans.

It is built for recognition.

For those who understand that wisdom rarely arrives loudly.

For people carrying responsibility without applause.

For readers who know that consistency is often more important than intensity.

For those trying to remain soft without becoming weak.
