Sixty-four years ago today, South Africa became a republic.
Not in 1994 — the date everyone remembers — but in 1961.

On this day, we severed the final constitutional cord with Britain.
No more Union Jack over Parliament.
No more God Save the Queen.
No more bowing to the Crown.

For the first time since 1652, this land stood truly alone —
as a republic, charting its own course.

Charles Robberts Swart was sworn in as the first State President of South Africa on that day, replacing Queen Elizabeth II as head of state.
A local voice, in place of a distant crown.

Interestingly, 31 May was no random choice.
It was already steeped in meaning —
📍 The date the Treaty of Vereeniging was signed in 1902, ending the Second Anglo-Boer War,
📍 And the date the Union of South Africa was formed in 1910.

History layered on history.

I'm not asking you to celebrate blindly.
But what emerged was formidable:
An African powerhouse with world-class infrastructure, economic strength, military capability, and fierce national identity.
Yes, some choices could have been different.
But the foundation was granite-solid.

We rush to remember 1994, as we should.
But let's stop pretending nationhood began there. It didn’t.

What I remember is watching that foundation —
hard-earned and fiercely built —
slowly crumble under neglect.

📍 31 May 1961 was our declaration of independence.
A milestone that deserves acknowledgement and celebration.

Because when we only remember history's comfortable chapters,
we lose the wisdom buried in the rest.

🧭 The day South Africa stood on its own two feet.
Don’t let them erase the whole story.
