“The Silence That Speaks: Lagom, Light, and Lessons from the North”
Fun Fact Friday – 18 April 2025

Sweden doesn't shout.
It doesn’t demand attention.
It waits — and in that waiting, it reveals something few places still understand:

There is power in quiet things.

📌 Fun Fact:
The Swedish word “lagom” has no perfect English translation.
It means “not too much, not too little” — just right.
But it’s more than moderation. It’s a philosophy of balance.
In lagom, you don’t overfill your glass or undercut your neighbour.
You take what is needed and leave what isn’t — in life, in work, in love.

There’s a light in Sweden that behaves the same way.
In summer, it overstays. In winter, it disappears.
And in between, it lingers like memory, grey and golden at once.

I’ve begun to think that my rhythm,
my way of listening before speaking,
my deep discomfort with excess —
might be less about personality,
and more about inheritance.

🧬 Thirteen percent of me comes from Sweden,
but in some seasons, it feels like more.
Especially in the early morning —
when the world is still negotiating light —
and the voice inside me says,
“Let it be enough.”

We live in a time of noise.
Everyone wants to be seen, to be heard, to be first.
But what if wisdom is still found in restraint?
In the discipline of not interrupting?
In the ability to leave a silence whole?

I’ve come to respect this ancient idea:
That some stories aren’t told with exclamation marks,
but with ellipses
the spaces that say:
“There’s more, but I trust you to feel it.”

That’s the kind of Sweden I carry.
