Suitcase Theology

✍️ Riaan M. Odendaal

I carry my faith more deeply now than ever before.
But I no longer drag along every rule someone else packed for me.

“Don’t drink.”
“Don’t wear this.”
“Don’t pray unless your eyes are closed or your knees are bent.”

I’ve learned that God is not boxed in by those conditions.
I can pray with my eyes open.
I can pray standing in a crowd.
I can meet Him in quiet, honest words — not in rigid rituals.

What I hold tightly is Him:
His Word. His presence. His grace.

What I’ve let go of is the weight of man-made checklists
that made holiness look like performance.

Faith was never meant to be a suitcase of rules.
It was meant to be a way of walking free —
lighter, closer, more real.

Even lilies know this secret.
They do not follow checklists or bend to rituals.
They grow by turning toward the light.
And so must I.
And so must you.

A suitcase of rules will break you.
A suitcase of grace will set you free.
Faith, like the lily,
leans always toward the light.
