We all know the saying — “The early bird catches the worm.”
But Pastor Wilson, the man who once stood in our pulpit and quietly shaped so many lives, had a way of turning conventional wisdom on its head.
His gentle, almost mischievous reply?
“Yes, but what if you were the worm?”
Pastor Wilson was known for his early morning home visits — not to surprise or catch people off-guard, but to see them. Really see them. Over toast and tea, before the day’s performance began. In their slippers, with bed hair and real laughter. He believed that the early morning held an honesty the rest of the day tried to hide.
As a young man, he once rode out to the ranch where the woman he loved lived. Why? He wanted to see what she looked like without makeup. Not out of spite or scrutiny — but because, in his words, “that’s when you see the truth.”
It was bold. It was unexpected. It was him.
And it left me thinking.
We’re so quick to applaud the early bird — the go-getter, the front-runner, the first to arrive. But what if we paused to ask, at whose expense? The early worm, after all, becomes the bait. It is all about timing.
Sometimes, being first isn’t wise — it’s vulnerable.
Sometimes, the wisest move is not to rise early, but to rise aware.
There’s a kind of strength in waiting.
In watching.
In knowing when it’s time to act — and when it’s time to stay beneath the soil just a little longer.
So here’s to Pastor Wilson — and to all the early worms who dare to show up as they are, but who also understand that not every opportunity is meant to be seized just because it comes early.
Timing is everything.
And not every early riser is a hero. Sometimes, they’re just hungry.
