The desert can be harsh, but some meals are soft landings. At Bruno’s Country Club in Gerlach, the plate that has carried travellers for decades is simple: ravioli with red sauce. No frills, no theatrics — just the kind of food that shows up, steady as the desert horizon.
🌵 The Place
Location: 445 Main Street, Gerlach, Nevada 89412
Style: Roadside country club in name, desert inn at heart. Straightforward, enduring, no pretence.
Atmosphere: Locals and travellers side by side. Formica tables, friendly nods, a wooden Indian statue keeping silent watch near the restroom entrance. It’s quirky, lived-in, and unmistakably Bruno’s.
🍝 The Food
Bruno’s Famous Ravioli — hand-made pasta pockets in rich Italian red sauce, with garlic bread on the side. The dish that made this place famous.
New York Steak Sandwich — hearty, grilled to order, served on a hoagie.
Patty Melt — burger with grilled onion and Swiss, toasted rye crisp against the juicy interior.
Prospector — house-made roast beef, green chile, pepper jack, stacked high on grilled sourdough.
Fish Tacos — lightened by cabbage and salsa, finished with a squeeze of lemon.
Daily Special — always worth asking; one day it’s meatloaf, the next chicken fried steak.
And yes — the garlic bread and pies remain steady companions.
🍹 The Drinks
Beers are ever-present, the desert’s unofficial currency. Prices are fair, and the pours honest. Then there’s the mimosa — my quiet favourite. Bright orange sparkle against Nevada dust, bubbles lifting the mood in a way only Bruno’s can.
🪵 Why It Matters
Because not all legends arrive loud. Some meals are remembered precisely because they don’t change. Bruno’s ravioli may headline the menu, but the story runs deeper: hearty sandwiches, daily specials, and drinks poured like continuity itself.
This is food that belongs to a place. Continuity on a plate — and in a glass.
📝 Closing Note
If you ever find yourself near Black Rock, stop in at Bruno’s. Order the ravioli, check the daily special, raise a mimosa or a beer — and notice the wooden sentinel in the corner who’s been watching it all for decades.
The question remains:
Will you sit this one out, or will you dance?
And when you go — tell them Riaan sent you.
