🌟 1. The Theatre and the True Light
On this Freedom Day, we will again hear speeches.
We will see social media posts, flags waving, children singing.
And some of it will be sincere.
But some of it will be theatre.
True unity is not built by hashtags or handshakes in front of cameras.
It is built slowly. Quietly.
With policies that protect the vulnerable — not praise the powerful.
Real freedom doesn’t need a microphone.
It needs integrity. Accountability. Mercy.
🛟 2. The Lighthouse That Simply Shines
We speak of freedom as if it’s a moment — a historic day on a calendar.
But freedom is not a day.
It is a direction.
A daily act of resisting control in all its subtle forms.
A refusal to be divided, even when division is more profitable.
That is why, in a world full of noise and nation-branding, I keep returning to the lighthouse:
Not as a symbol of isolation — but of orientation.
A lighthouse doesn’t call attention to itself.
It simply shines.
It stays lit through storms.
It outlasts slogans.
It exists not to be celebrated — but to serve.
⚖️ 3. A Moment of Respect
I was born in 1961 — in a country still tethered to the Crown, yet on the brink of becoming a republic.
On 31 May 1961, South Africa became sovereign.
That date, for me, was the first marker of freedom.
I know that for many, 27 April 1994 will always carry sacred meaning —
the day apartheid’s legal machinery was dismantled,
the day long-awaited dignity was reclaimed.
I do not diminish that. I honour it.
But I carry a different lens.
One that sees 31 May 1961 not as a footnote, but as a first step.
One that believes we can celebrate milestones without silencing the evidence that followed them.
⚡ 4. My Reflection on "Freedom"
The Freedom Day we observe now?
The day that placed a man of great stature in power —
but gave way to decades of hollow promises and crumbling systems?
I do not recognise that day as mine.
We did not become free.
We became beholden.
Not to oppression in the old sense —
but to the quiet tyranny of misused trust.
🌲 5. Still Standing, Still Watching
I look at it now through the part of me that feels deeply Scandinavian —
ordered, principled, quietly expectant of integrity.
And I say this not as someone removed, but as someone still here.
Someone who watches infrastructure crumble,
who sees the vulnerable remain vulnerable,
who sees the coffers emptied —
while the cameras still roll.
We called it freedom.
But what we received was theatre.
A house built on slogans.
A system designed to echo — not to serve.
I know what freedom looks like.
And I know when it has been traded for power.
