J: Today we're going to look at two, uh, two little English words. They often
cause a bit of confusion.
M: Yeah, for and since. We hear this a lot, right? Definitely. A lot of learners find
them tricky, I think. Especially if, you know, your first language maybe just uses
one word for both concepts.
J: Right. So our aim today is pretty simple. Make using for and since really clear
and easy for you.
M: Let's do it.
J: Okay, so, uh, where do we start? Both words, they talk about actions that
started in the past and, well, they're still relevant now, still happening maybe.
M: Mm-hmm. That's the connection. But they focus on different things. Let's
uh, let's tackle since first.
J: Good idea.
M: Since basically points to a specific starting time. Think of it like, um, putting
a pin on a calendar or a timeline.
J: Okay, a starting point. Like I remember seeing an example, someone lived in
their house since childhood.
M: Exactly. Childhood is that specific period when the living started. It answers
since when.
J: Gotcha.
M: Yeah.
J: And there was another one, knowing a friend, Jenny, since high school.
M: Right. High school, you get a specific time phase. It's not a duration, it's a
starting marker.
J: Okay. And, uh, we also saw examples like since 2019.
M: Yep.
J: Or since Tuesday, or even since 3 o'clock. Very specific points in time.
M: Precisely. So if the answer is a specific date or time or event in the past
when something began, you're probably looking at since.
J: Since when did it start? Since give you that answer.
M: Perfect. Now, what about for?
J: Okay. For. This one feels different. It seems to be about, um, the length of
time, right? The duration.
M: Exactly. It answers how long. Mm-hmm. So not when it started, but how
long it has lasted.
J: Like the example working as a teacher for 11 years.
M: Mm-hmm. 11 years is the duration, the period....
