Cause & Effect Cards + A Full Kipper Spread Walkthrough
Kipper doesn’t just show what is. It reveals why it’s happening—and what it influences. That’s the domain of the Cause & Effect Cards. These cards operate as both reflection and forecast. They invite us to consider: What just happened? What energy caused this moment? And what will it ripple into next?
The 6 Cause & Effect Cards:
8. Dishonesty / False Person → The figure turns their back to the right and looks to the left. The right shows the source of the deception or the hidden motive. The left reveals what the betrayal impacts or who suffers from the secrecy.
14. Sad News → The figure recoils to the right, suggesting that the left is where the news originates (cause), and the right is where that grief energy travels (effect).
19. Fatality / Coffin → Multi-directional. The right often shows the cause of the end. The left reveals what that ending impacts. The top shows what grieves. The bottom shows what is transformed. Bottom left diagonal = what is finalized and cut.
24. Theft → The figure looks right. The left = what is being taken or drained. The right = what’s being affected or what gains power through the theft.
28. Expectation → A seated figure gazes longingly right. The left shows the source or desire’s root. The right is what is being waited for or manifested.
33. Gloomy Thoughts → The figure’s back faces right. The right often shows the source of distress or illusion. The left shows what is dimmed, impacted, or affected.
✨ Reading Tip:
Watch the posture, gaze, and gesture of the figure in the card. That will tell you what side is the origin (cause) and which side bears the outcome (effect). This is not always left-to-right logic. Kipper teaches us to read the emotional and symbolic orientation within the scene.
🎴 Sample Spread: Main Character 2 – Work – Short Illness – Change – Good Gentleman
Querent is burned out. Work is stalled. Change is underway, initiated by an unaware male figure. Energy is shifting toward rest and healing.
Let’s walk this out step-by-step, together:
1. Main Character 2 → Signifier / Start Card
This card represents the Querent—the reader or person asking the question. Everything else unfolds around her. She is the anchor.
2. Work (34) → Stop Card
This immediately tells us something is stuck or at a pause in her work life. Because this is a Stop Card, we know this storyline has reached a breaking or stall point.
3. Short Illness (31) → Connector Card
This card bridges Work and Change. It shows the consequence of the Work card—burnout, exhaustion, perhaps even spiritual depletion. But as a Connector, it also ties us to what comes next.
4. Change (9) → Movement Card
Here’s where the flow starts again. Change begins from the right side, which means it’s initiated by the Good Gentleman—and it’s moving toward Short Illness. That’s fascinating: something about this man or his influence is pushing her into a necessary period of recovery.
5. Good Gentleman (5) → Directional Card (Faces Right)
He’s facing away. That tells us a lot—he doesn’t see the consequences of his influence. Whether he's a boss, mentor, or authority figure, he may be unknowingly contributing to the burnout that sparked the change.
🧭 Direction + Flow Summary:
Work is done. Stop.
Short Illness connects burnout to the need for change.
Change is initiated by the Good Gentleman, who doesn’t realize what he's triggered.
The flow of the spread moves away from authority and toward recovery.
