Hungry Cat is my trail name, given to me on my 2018 Appalachian Trail thru-hike. My real name is Kevin.
I'm a long-distance hiker, writer, storyteller, and ex workaholic tech guy currently living in Wilmington, North Carolina. I write stories, tell stories, and make videos to tell stories about life, using the vehicles of hiking and traveling to do so.
Backstory:
In 2018, at 40 years old I left a corporate job in the tech world and went off to thru-hike the entire Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine (2190+ miles!). I was tired of working long hours, nights, weekends, and holidays, and feeling like I was neglecting the people and experiences that were important to me. Every day felt like Groundhog Day - waking up and repeating the same burn-out pattern. I kept a trail journal on my hike, and that led me to create the Unfettered Footsteps blog and YouTube channel. I wanted to share my adventures, as well as the process of transitioning to a new way of thinking about my life, my time, and my income. I am also in recovery, having been sober for over 6 years now, and when the time is right, I intend to talk a lot about that journey.
For me, success means connecting with people through my writing and content, inspiring them to prioritize adventure and happiness in their own lives. If people connect with me because they feel stuck, I want to show them that they can make positive changes - that it is possible to go against the grain and to be happy.

Your backstory sounds similar to the one I am on -- I am in my 30s and want to work towards supporting myself outside of the traditional corporate lifestyle. Keep it up! Excited to take a break and hike the Art Loeb with my boyfriend. It's been on my must-do backpacking list.
Thank you so much! The Art Loeb is great! I hope you enjoy it. I’m back on the corporate hamster wheel at the moment, but doing a backpacking trip in the Sawtooths in Idaho in Sept and working on my future exit from corporate . Will probably put some content around that Sawtooths trip. Thanks again and glad you are finding a way to get out there!
