A hernia diagnosis is only the beginning. When is repair appropriate? Which approach suits the patient? What structures must be protected? And how should the plan change when the hernia is recurrent, complicated, or urgent?
*Hernia Surgery Code* by Dr. Atef Ahmed brings these questions into focus through 200 illustrated educational topics organized across 20 chapters.
Designed for general surgeons and surgical trainees, this illustrated guide connects anatomical understanding with clinical assessment, operative planning, and the recognition of complications.
Rather than treating every hernia as the same problem, it emphasizes the factors that shape an individualized repair: symptoms, defect anatomy, tissue quality, physiological reserve, contamination, previous surgery, and patient preferences.
What You’ll Explore
- Abdominal-wall and groin anatomy, including fascial planes, nerves, vessels, and relationships that guide dissection.
- Diagnosis and patient selection, from clinical presentation and imaging to observation, elective repair, and urgent assessment.
- Mesh, sutures, fixation, and repair mechanics, with attention to tension, tissue quality, reinforcement, and prosthetic concerns.
- Open, laparoscopic, and robotic approaches, including inguinal repair, TAPP, TEP, ventral repair, and extraperitoneal concepts.
- Complex abdominal-wall reconstruction, including component separation, transversus abdominis release, loss of domain, and parastomal hernia.
- Complications and failed repair, including infection, chronic pain, recurrence, bowel injury, and specialist referral.
- Hiatal, diaphragmatic, pediatric, internal, and uncommon hernias, including Roux-en-Y internal hernia and traumatic abdominal-wall defects.
A Visual Format for Focused Learning
Each educational topic pairs a clinical question with an illustration, comparison, sequence, or decision pathway.
Read the foundations in order or return to individual topics for targeted study, teaching discussions, and professional review.
The emphasis is not simply on how an operation is approached, but on why a particular strategy may be appropriate—and when a different plan is needed.
Who Is It For?
- General surgeons.
- Surgical residents and fellows.
- Senior medical students.
- Clinical educators seeking focused illustrated topics for discussion.
