building VisualWeather.eu
Hey there! 👋
If you've followed my weather updates on social media over the last 15+ years, you know how deep I like to dive into meteorological data.
While my older project, Antimeteo, provided traditional icon-based daily forecast, my passion and heavy lifting are now focused on a new platform: VisualWeather.eu.
What is VisualWeather? It isn't a standard weather app, and it's not trying to replace giants like Windy. Instead, it is the exact custom workbench I use to interrogate forecast data, now opened up to you. It’s built specifically for a narrow audience of weather enthusiasts and professionals who want to look under the hood and add real analytical value to their workflow.
Right now, the platform runs a custom WRF model for Greece at a 3km resolution, pushed even further with a downscaling process that delivers temperature and snowfall data at a massive 500m resolution. When severe or unusual weather strikes, I can rapidly adapt the site to provide highly targeted tools for that specific event. The platform is evolving fast: more than 110 updates shipped in its first three months, every one documented in the release notes on the site.
Why your support matters: Running high-resolution models and processing massive amounts of data requires serious computing power and server resources. Plus, there is a lot of development on the horizon. Your support directly helps fund the infrastructure needed for me to:
Maintain the current 3km WRF / 500m downscaled models for Greece.
Develop a brand new, leaner model based on WRF and CM1 to optimize speed and quality.
Launch our inactive but fully tested 4km pipeline for the broader SE Mediterranean (covering Cyprus, Turkey, and Israel).
Build on the ICON-EU integration that is already live on the site, with the 40-member ensembles next, surfaced in a way that truly maximizes their interpretive value.
If you use these advanced tools in your workflow, or if you just want to support the ongoing development of a specialized platform built for our community, consider buying me a coffee. Every bit goes directly into server costs and keeping this passion project alive and growing.
Let's interrogate the data together! 🌩️
