If you've just found me, here's the short version of who's writing.
My name is Adontai Mason. A little over a month ago, I started a brand called Kosmic Quill. Not long before that, I didn't have a place to write from.
I recently came out of four years of homelessness. I don't say that for sympathy. I say it because it's the floor I'm writing from, and that floor is the whole reason the words mean what they mean.
The climb
Right now my life is a balancing act, and the plates are still wobbling.
I'm working. I'm climbing — carefully, because I know how fast the ground can move. There are still weeks that knock me back. A bill comes due before the check clears. A day off cuts into income I was counting on. There was a week my phone got shut off and email was the only way anyone could reach me. Getting back on your feet was never a clean upward line. It's two steps forward, a setback, a check that's finally on its way. You keep going anyway.
The work
Somewhere in the middle of all of it, I started creating. That's what Kosmic Quill is.
I don't have a technical background. I can't build the way engineers build. What I can do is take the scattered thoughts in my head and turn them into essays, videos, and images that say something true about what homelessness actually looks like from the inside. Most of what you've read about being unhoused was written by people looking in through the glass. I'm writing from the other side of it.
Where it's going
I don't want this to stop at telling my own story.
The real goal is to become a resource — to build something that outlasts my own climb and reaches the next person still on the floor. I lived the gap between the homelessness people picture and the homelessness people survive. I want to close it. That means advocacy. It means showing up for the people the system overlooks, the way I was overlooked. Kosmic Quill is where I'm sharpening the voice to do it.
Where you come in — if you want to
Much of what I write here is free to read. Some of it lives behind a paywall — deeper dives, exclusive essays, and content I reserve for supporters who want to go further with the work. If it lands somewhere in you, you can buy me a coffee.
That's not charity. It's fuel. It helps me keep writing on the hard weeks, steady the ground under my own feet, and put real work behind the mission instead of just talk. Every coffee says one thing — keep going — and on the weeks that's hard to believe on my own, that matters more than I can tell you.
After four years of being unhoused, the truest thing I can say is this: I have a voice again, and I'm using it on purpose.

Find me elsewhere
The writing lives in more than one place. You can find me on Substack and Medium, where I publish essays and longer-form pieces. And there's also www.kosmicquill.com — a work in progress, a beta, and an ongoing project in itself. It's being built in real time alongside everything else, so expect it to grow and shift as the work does.
