PISA 2025 Results: Student Reading Ability Drops Worldwide Massively

The PISA 2025 results and their analysis have been released by the OECD.
This is a massive survey that measures student abilities across 98 countries in math, reading, and science.

The main findings are that there is a very significant drop in students' ability to understand written, complex text.
Math and science abilities have decreased overall too.

This correlates strongly with increased AI use: if students are using AI more, without school guidance and very careful educational planning then the new tech harms their abilities more than it improves them.

There is also strong evidence that large numbers of students don't check the info they find online against any reliable source, even though overall their technical problem solving skills are better than before.

I hope there will be more money for teaching and humanities, social sciences and for schools in general. It seems clear that the road ahead is not simply to use AI more, but to slow down and integrate the new tools in education and work in ways that really benefit people, not just the companies that make money on them.
