Public opinion has always been extremely important for policymakers and politicians, as well as businesses and militaries.
Every significant international actor is trying to control the narrative on events and questions that are important for it.
I made a video on one particular interesting case that shows that governments now target LLMs. They try to manipulate the answers that LLMs give on certain questions in the same way in which 10-15 years ago they tried to manipulate what we found using Google and other search engines.
Of course this new technology could also be used for good. As typically, the tech itself is morally neutral. It is all about what it is used for. Influencing LLMs could be used to give more scientifically accurate answers, to dispel fake news and propaganda, to help people find healthcare resources faster, and so on.
But as usual, one of the first use cases we find is in information warfare.
