In the diverse world of game design, inclusivity can sometimes be overlooked, but one innovative system, ColorADD, is making waves by ensuring that color vision deficiencies no longer hinder the ability to play and enjoy games. Developed by Portuguese graphic designer Miguel Neiva, ColorADD is a color identification system that uses unique symbols to represent colors, making it possible for those with color blindness to identify colors accurately and easily. ColorADD's system is elegantly simple, using monochromatic symbols to represent primary colors. These symbols can be combined to create a wider spectrum of colors, mirroring the way primary colors mix. This approach is not just a boon for accessibility; it represents a universal language of color that transcends cultural and language barriers, promoting inclusivity in a variety of fields including education, transportation, and particularly in the realm of game design. The potential of ColorADD in games is immense, especially in strategy or party games where colors play a pivotal role in gameplay mechanics. By incorporating ColorADD symbols, game designers can ensure that their games are playable and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of their ability to perceive color.

As a game designer, my journey began with the development of "Art of Spots". While designing the game, I consulted with a friend who has Deuteranopia to discuss the colors and whether he could distinguish the differences on the cards. Following this, I decided to include both X's and O's on the spots to enhance clarity and ensure that gameplay relied on symbols as well as colors. Now, having learned about ColorADD, I am planning to incorporate it into my games wherever possible. Currently, I am close to completing another project, "INSIDE ME," which will incorporate the ColorADD system. This endeavor is not just about creating another game; it's about fostering an inclusive environment where the joy of gaming is accessible to everyone.

The impact of ColorADD is already visible in the gaming community. One notable example is "Sea, Salt and Paper" by the famous designers Bruno Cathala and Théo Rivière. A few days before, Mattel has announced that it will be incorporating the ColorADD system into some of its most beloved games. The ColorADD system, which uses monochrome symbols to help colorblind individuals identify colors, will be introduced in games such as UNO. They announced this week that 80% of games portfolio will be color-blind accessible by the end of the year, a figure it says will reach 90% by the end of 2025. This is a game that relies heavily on color differentiation, and by integrating ColorADD, Mattel is making a classic family favorite accessible to a wider audience. This not only enhances the gameplay experience for those with color vision deficiencies but also sets a powerful example for other companies in the industry.
