So far I have been at WGU for a little over a year and a half and I have not had a lot of luck with mentors. Not by choice, but I am currently on Mentor #4. Its hard when it feels like any moment the mentor that you had just disappears. It feels a bit like the rug is pulled out from underneath you.
I have discussed this with many others to see if this is a common issue and it is a bit of a mixed bag. Being online, it is hard to find that Goldilocks Mentor that meets your needs. If you are like me, then you are a bit of a driven introvert. I do not have any need for hand holding or reminding of what my schedule is. I am very organized. I tend to be the type that does the ultimate research for a course and give myself my own goals and timelines.
Perhaps it is the Xennial in me, but I really just do not enjoy talking to someone on the phone. I find the entire business inefficient. It is so much easier to let someone know exactly what is going on with an email or a text. This medium allows me to organize my thoughts and put out exactly what I need without any extraneous gibber gabber. If I had a mentor for a long time and built a rapport, I guess it would probably be different.
Since you are all fellow online students, my best advice is to find someone out there that can be your mentor and match your needs. There are features that a WGU mentor can provide, but outside of that you may want someone to talk to or be a cheerleader to your progress. It doesn't need to be someone attached to the school. That little extra may just help uplift you into being the best student that you can be.
My mentor is my cat Lionel that is a rescue I adopted from the Humane Society. I am not sure what it is about him, but he knows exactly when I need him and he lifts me up
