Need For Younger Workampers

Need For Younger Workampers

Jun 07, 2025

I have been trying for years to encourage younger people, such as college students taking classes in the Environmental Sciences, to volunteer during the summer months. Any college student who has access to a self-contained recreational vehicle of some kind for the summer months can spending 8 weeks to 12 weeks in a beautiful public land area where you can take nature photographs, paint nature, finish writing a book, get started on your senior thesis, but more than anything gain some volunteer hours that look great on your resume.

For those taking any of the sciences, you could train with the park rangers, help them with their projects, and perhaps even get some extra credit. It is a great way to advocate for environmental protection, learn about our history, and participate in conservation events. Even college students not taking science classes could benefit from these types of assignments. For those who want to write a book, volunteering in these quiet places is an excellent way to get that story finished. You only have to work for 20 to 24 hours per week, and the rest of the week can be spent the way you would like. The fresh air and quiet can help stimulate your muse. You will need to be able to provide for your own food and personal care items, so some kind of savings would be needed.

Now, for my road warriors out there. With or without children, you can still volunteer in the state parks. Remember, in exchange for those 20 to 24 hours each week, you get a free place to live with water, electric, sewer, and sometimes even free firewood, ice, the use of park equipment, and much more. Your children can use the facilities, become a junior ranger, and learn about their local environment.

I am hoping to get back on the road myself to write books, work with clients on Zoom, and travel from park to park, taking pictures, videos, and advocating for our public land areas. Selling my books, providing consultation services, and finishing my college degrees is how I want to spend the last half of my life. I have started a couple of Substack publications and two BuyMeACoffee accounts as well. So if you can Share, Like, Comment, Subscribe, and perhaps even donate what and when you can?
