A Friday studio peek

imageHello! Until now, this Buy Me a Coffee page has been a quiet home for Why Logic Pro Rules followers to show their support. (Thank you for that by the way!)

Today I wanted to share a candid moment from my week. The photo above is a peek at what I’m working on right now.

This year I’ve had this desire to reach out and actually touch the tools I make music with. So I’ve leaned into controllers and picked up a couple of pieces of hardware.

Until the last couple of years, I’d only ever worked entirely “in the box.” Managing plugins, faders, and knobs one at a time strictly with a mouse.

Now controllers give me direct control of plugins and channel strips in Logic Pro, and hardware lets me run audio through actual real-life gear. Which is super cool! It’s also made me intimately familiar with Logic’s I/O plugin.

Right now I’m mixing songs for an album, and I’ve been running all sorts of tracks through different devices. In the photo, I’m using a Chroma Console pedal to add delay to a guitar.

This song is pretty emotionally heavy, and I wanted the picked electric guitar to feel “lonely” to carry the lyrics. And the delay gave it that ambient, "I'm alone here" feeling.

Before the Chroma Console, I ran the guitar through my Scarlett’s preamp with Air + Drive engaged, which gave this mid-heavy guitar a high-end lift and a mid cut.

Having all these controls on my desk has both sped up and slowed down my workflow.

Faster, because I can reach out and grab a control immediately. Slower, because I’m doing more listening. And recalling hardware takes a few extra steps now too 😉
