John 1:3-4 (NKJV)
John 1:4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
John 1:5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
Jesus is the life of men. He said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life, no man comes to the Father but by Me. The resurrected Christ is the only source of spiritual life. No other religion provides this.
This same Jesus is called the light. Later in John 12:35-36, we read, Then Jesus said to them, “A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and was hidden from them.
Light illuminates and expels the darkness. (John 3:19-21) So too, Jesus is the light of the world who we look to for salvation and turn to in repentance. Our evil deeds are brought to the light and forgiven by His blood through the work of His cross. We are cleansed by His precious blood and that despite all of the efforts of the enemy and those who walk in darkness. Jesus will save those whom He has predestined, called, justified, and glorified. (Romans 8:30)
