Astor Markhor

Astor Markhor

Dec 21, 2023

The Astor markhor, a type of markhor found in Kashmir, northern Pakistan, and eastern Afghanistan, was once endangered but now classified as "near-threatened" due to successful conservation efforts. With a scattered population estimated at around 5,800 individuals, it inhabits mountainous regions at altitudes up to 3,600 meters. These goats feed on grasses, leaves, and shrubs, facing threats from predators like snow leopards, wolves, lynx, and golden eagles. Hunting remains a significant danger despite protective measures in some areas. In India, it's fully protected within wildlife reserves, while in Pakistan, it resides in various sanctuaries, including the Naltar Wildlife Sanctuary. Conservation initiatives aim to safeguard its habitat, considering plans to establish the Kazinag National Park for the protection of the Astor markhor alongside other endangered mammals like the snow leopard and Himalayan brown bear.imageCC:  Anadolu Agency
