Surprise! You’re in Sales (Even If You Think You’re Not)

May 09, 2025

If I asked whether you consider yourself a salesperson, chances are your answer would be a resounding "No" ,unless you work in the sales/marketing department or run your own business. But here’s the kicker: whether you realize it or not, we’re all in sales.

That’s right. Every day, we’re selling; ideas, opinions, suggestions. Convincing your child to eat broccoli? Selling. Persuading a friend to like your latest Instagram post? Selling. Negotiating where to eat dinner? Definitely selling.

Daniel H. Pink, author of To Sell Is Human, says it best: “One in nine Americans works in sales, but so do the other eight.” His book flips the script on the old-school idea that only certain people are “born” salespeople. Instead, Pink argues, we all have the instinct to sell. What we need is to learn how to do it well.

In the book, he introduces a refreshing framework, the new ABCs of selling; not “Always Be Closing,” but:

1. Attunement

This is the art of aligning yourself with the person you're trying to persuade. It’s about seeing things from their perspective and tailoring your message to meet their specific needs. Pink highlights a study with MBA students, showing that those who practiced perspective-taking closed the most deals. The takeaway? The best salespeople listen more than they talk.

2. Buoyancy

Rejection is part of the process, and buoyancy is what keeps you afloat when the answer is “no.” Pink suggests using interrogative self-talk (asking yourself helpful questions before the pitch), keeping a healthy level of optimism, and adopting a resilient mindset. Think of it as your emotional lifejacket in the choppy waters of persuasion.

3. Clarity

Today, information is everywhere, but what people really need is clarity. Your job isn't just to sell—it’s to help others understand what their real problem is and how your idea, product, or solution fits in. When people can clearly compare where they are now versus where they could be, action follows naturally.

This book gave me a completely new lens on what it means to sell. No more cringey images of pushy salespeople trying to guilt you into buying things you don’t need. Instead, it’s about connection, value, and mutual benefit.

And if you’ve read this far, well… maybe I am getting better at this selling thing. I even got you to follow this page, didn’t I? 😉

Highly recommended read if you’re ready to start selling like a pro, without the ick.
