This a simple tutorial on how to start sewing leather. Very different from sewing cloth, leather requires you to punch sewing holes in the leather first in order to sew them together. The hole punch size, spacing, shape, and etc are particular in the leather realm. Same as the sewing needles and threads, thickness and shape also varies from project to project. But let's not dive into those here! This is a simple tutorial of just leather, needles and thread.

First step: Thread the needles

We will need a piece of thread three times the sewing area's length.

On each end of the thread, we will attach a needle. You will need to thread the needles on both ends of the thread.

imageStart with one end.

Pull thread through the needle.

imageFlip to the other side of the needle. Pinch the end of the thread through the tip of the needle.

imageDo the last step two more times (3 times in total)

imageSlide the thread down.

imageAll the way down. It will pass the eye.

imagePull on the other end of the thread.

imagetightening it up. That's one end done!

Repeat on the the other end of the thread.

Second step: Sew the leather

imageTo sew the leather, run one needle through the punched hole.

imageAt the same hole push the other needle through from the other side.

imageThe needles will be crossing on top of each other.

imagePull both needles out from the opposite directions. Tighten the thread.

That's all! Now repeat the step until reach the final hole.

Final step: Smear the ends.

imageAt the end of sewing. Run the last stich to the same side. Cut off excess thread.

imageUse a lighter to burn off the ends.

imageSmooth out the burnt thread with the lighter or a finger immediately. The ends will attach to the stiches (because leather sewing threads have wax in them.)

All done!
