One important factor to become a solid team is to have highly effective communication inside the court. When teams lose a match, you might hear some players attributing it to lack of communication. Another example is when you see a setter tossing the ball to nobody. That’s a result of miscommunication.
And, as creative as we, Pinoys, are, we have developed special terms to make communication inside the volleyball court more effective and more fun.
If you are new to volleyball, here’s a list of volleyball jargons that most Pinoys use especially in amateur games (larong kalye):
Positions
Dos – Outside Hitter
Tres – Middle Blocker
Kwatro – Opposite Spiker
Farewell / Ikot ikot lang – next in line to serve / next to leave the front line (so dapat mabigyan na ng set or else feeling dyeta at baka um-Ate Chona)
Actions/Hits
Manipis – cutshot/extreme cross court hit
Baon/Tusok – bounce ball
Kulam – serve or spike hitting the net first before going over the opponent’s court and scores a point/pechay but scores a point nonetheless
Puto – excellent dig
Butterfly/Palaypay – dig na parang bagong manicure
Na-Vicky Belo/Na-chenes – na-facial
Jocemer Tapic – drop ball/soft hit
Kalmot – mis-hit but went over the opponent’s court
Pa-check – off the block
Touching/Chismis – when a player commits a net fault.
First line – baon, nasobrahan sa baon, sa ilalim ng net dumaan yung bola
Triple – sobra-sobra sa double contact
Payong – block intended to bring the ball straight to the ground
Salo – block intended for a block touch only
Regalo – attacking an over-received ball from the opponent
Homerun/Happy birthday – super outside na serve o spike
Pechay – walang ka-power-power na palo/easy to dig na palo
Block party – consecutive kill blocks by a player/team
Puto party – consecutive excellent digs by a player/team
Barbiehan – saktong rally lang, walang hampasan ng malala
Ipis/Ipisan – walang babagsak na bola, angat lahat
Kape – gusto lagi maglaro/game lagi
Player
Barugera – Kalei Mau levels
Meldi – maldita
Ate Chona – attitude
Hiponia – service specialist na nag-error sa serve
Amazona – baklang maton na halimaw pumalo
Dayo – guest player / guest team
Valdez – taga-buhat ng team
Pantone – effortless digger
Jia Morado – no look dump ball
Play/Set
Uno – play for Outside Hitter, close to the antenna
Dos – play for Outside Hitter, not too close to the antenna
Tres – differential play for the middle
Kwatro – play for Opposite Spiker, not too close to the antenna
Singko – play for Opposite Spiker, close to the antenna
Sais – backrow hit
Pasok – A-quick
Sibat – B-quick/C-quick
Patong – combination play
Tumba – short running hit
Dikit – close to the net
Buka – away from the net
Taas mo lang / tirik – high set
Buksan mo lang – don’t block a particular angle
Paraan – adjust from a poor set
Dacoron – running ang approach pero sa gitna papalo
Dyeta / flower vase – spiker na hindi binibigyan o bihira bigyan ng set
