Now Let’s Eat Some Meat!

Proverbs 22:4 (AMP): “The reward of humility [that is, having a realistic view of one’s importance] and the reverent, worshipful fear of the Lord is riches, honor, and life.”

Context of Proverbs 22:4

The book of Proverbs is filled with practical teachings and moral insights. King Solomon, renowned for his God-given wisdom, wrote most of these sayings to guide believers in leading righteous, successful lives. Proverbs 22 addresses themes of integrity, generosity, and the consequences of various attitudes. Verse 4 stands out by linking humility and a reverent fear of the Lord directly to tangible blessings. It encapsulates a fundamental truth: true prosperity stems not from self-exaltation but from a life dedicated to humility and respect for God.

Exploration of Proverbs 22:4 The Call to Humility

Key Phrase: “The reward of humility”

Humility involves recognizing one’s true position before God and therefore others. It is not false modesty but an acknowledgment of one’s dependence on God and an awareness that all blessings ultimately come from Him. The Amplified Bible clarifies humility as “having a realistic view of one’s importance.” This perspective keeps believers from seeking self-glorification and allows them to prioritize serving others and glorifying God. Humility positions individuals to receive divine guidance, as seen in James 4:6 (AMP): “But He gives us more and more grace [through the power of the Holy Spirit, to defy sin and live an obedient life that reflects both our faith and our gratitude for our salvation]. Therefore, it says, ‘God is opposed to the proud and haughty, but [continually] gives [the gift of] grace to the humble [who turn away from self-righteousness].’”

This verse reinforces that God’s grace and favor are reserved for those who live humbly. Pride leads to a hardened heart and self-reliance, while humility invites God’s intervention and blessings.

Relevance to Today’s Believers:

In modern times, society often equates success with self-promotion and power. Many individuals are taught to focus on their achievements and status. Proverbs 22:4 challenges this perspective, urging believers to adopt a spirit of humility instead. This mindset shapes how Christians interact with others, handle their ambitions, and respond to challenges. By choosing humility, believers open themselves to receiving God’s grace, which fuels their spiritual growth and aligns them with His will.

The Worshipful Fear of the Lord

Key Phrase: “And the reverent, worshipful fear of the Lord”

The fear of the Lord is not about being afraid of God but having a deep respect, awe, and love for Him that influences every action and decision. It acknowledges His sovereignty and majesty, leading to a lifestyle that honors Him. Proverbs frequently ties the fear of the Lord to wisdom and well-being. Proverbs 9:10 (AMP) affirms; “The [reverent] fear of the Lord [that is, worshiping Him and regarding Him as truly awesome] is the beginning and the preeminent part of wisdom, [its starting point and its essence]; And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding and spiritual insight.”

Reverence for God reshapes priorities. It compels believers to seek what pleases Him and reject what contradicts His nature.

Relevance to Today’s Believers:

Many are enticed by a life without moral absolutes. There is a tendency to rely on human understanding rather than seeking divine wisdom. This scripture acts as a powerful reminder to center life around God’s truth. Believers are encouraged to cultivate a reverent fear of the Lord that directs their path and influences their character. Such fear results in wise choices and a life that reflects God's glory.

The Promise of Riches, Honor, and Life

Key Phrase: “Is riches, honor, and life”

The Amplified Bible details the rewards of humility and reverence as “riches, honor, and life.” These rewards encompass more than material wealth. Make no mistake, material wealth is also part of “riches” in the Biblical sense. However “riches” also include spiritual blessings, fulfilling relationships, and inner peace. “Honor” refers to respect and esteem that come from others as a result of living in a way that reflects God’s principles. “Life” denotes not just physical existence but a meaningful,  joyful life filled with God’s purpose.

Psalm 112:1-3 (AMP) complements this idea, it reads; “Praise the Lord! (Hallelujah!) Blessed [fortunate, prosperous, and favored by God] is the man who fears the Lord [with awe-inspired reverence and worships Him with obedience], Who delights greatly in His commandments. His descendants will be mighty on earth; The generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever.”

These verses illustrate that those who prioritize reverence and obedience to God find themselves in a state of blessedness that extends to various aspects of their lives. It is not just material gain but a holistic abundance marked by God’s favor.

Relevance to Today’s Believers:

In a world driven by quick success and superficial accolades, Proverbs 22:4 speaks of deeper, lasting rewards. Believers are reminded that true prosperity lies in aligning themselves with God’s will and pursuing His values. Riches gained through integrity, honor that stems from righteous living, and life filled with divine purpose surpass any worldly achievement. This perspective helps us believers remain grounded, seeking fulfillment in God rather than external validation.

Summary

Proverbs 22:4 conveys an essential principle for believers: humility and reverence for God lead to true rewards. It challenges Christians to adopt an approach to life that values submission to God’s will and prioritizes His guidance.
