"What Must I Do to Please God?" – Day 9 of 14: Know, Understand & Perform Your Role as Christ’s Ambassador

Introduction

Today, on the ninth day of our two-week series on What Must I Do to Please God?, we focus on an essential piece: knowing, understanding, and performing your role as Christ’s ambassador in whatever vocation God has placed you. This calling, detailed in 2 Corinthians 5:20, speaks to the believer’s role in representing Christ in every area of life. The term “ambassador” reflects a high level of responsibility, requiring wisdom, discernment, and intentionality. Being an ambassador for Christ means living in such a way that others can see His character through us.

Our purpose as ambassadors is to share God’s love, truth, and grace with those around us. This role is not limited to church or ministry settings; it applies to every aspect of our lives, whether in business, education, home, or community. By knowing, understanding, and fulfilling this role, we bring glory to God and align ourselves with His purpose. Today’s scripture reveals the weight of our calling and encourages us to embrace our role with sincerity and dedication.

Now Let’s Eat Some Meat!

2 Corinthians 5:20 (AMP): "So we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making His appeal through us; we [as Christ’s representatives] plead with you on behalf of Christ to be reconciled to God."

Context of 2 Corinthians 5:20

In this scripture, Paul is speaking to the Corinthian church about the believer’s role in the ministry of reconciliation. To be an ambassador for Christ is to act as His representative, sharing the message of reconciliation with the world. Paul explains that God works through us to call others to Himself. This position as an ambassador is not optional but an essential part of the Christian life. God has entrusted us with His message, and it is our privilege and duty to share it.

Paul’s words remind us that our lives are not just our own; we are representatives of Christ, reflecting His love, grace, and truth. This role requires integrity, consistency, and a heart that is aligned with God’s mission.

How to Be an Effective Ambassador for Christ

Key Phrase: “We are ambassadors for Christ.”

To be an ambassador for Christ requires intentionality in how we live, speak, and interact with others. Below are specific steps to help believers embrace and fulfill this role in their daily lives.

Know Your Role

  1. Recognize the calling: Accept that being an ambassador for Christ is not optional. It’s a calling for every believer, regardless of profession or status.

  2. Understand the message of reconciliation: As ambassadors, our message is one of reconciliation—bringing others into relationship with God through Christ.

  3. Acknowledge your responsibility: Embrace the truth that God makes His appeal through us, meaning we have a crucial part in His plan to reach others.

Romans 10:14 (AMP): "But how will people call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how will they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher (messenger)?"

This scripture highlights the importance of every believer’s role in sharing the message of Christ. As ambassadors, we are the messengers, carrying God’s truth to those who have not heard.

Understand Your Role

  1. Study the life of Christ: Jesus is our example for how to represent God in all areas of life. Study His compassion, humility, and commitment to God’s mission.

  2. Practice empathy and humility: Ambassadors for Christ should mirror His character, acting with kindness, patience, and understanding toward others.

  3. Pray for guidance and wisdom: Seek the Holy Spirit’s help to discern opportunities to share Christ’s message and to respond with grace and truth.

Matthew 5:16 (AMP): "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good deeds and moral excellence, and [recognize and honor and] glorify your Father who is in heaven."

Living as an ambassador means letting our actions reflect Christ’s love, so that others may be drawn to God.

Perform Your Role

  1. Be a witness in your daily interactions: Use your words and actions to demonstrate Christ’s love, whether at work, at home, or in the community.

  2. Speak the truth in love: When opportunities arise, share the message of Christ openly and lovingly, pointing others toward God.

  3. Commit to personal growth: An ambassador continually seeks to grow in knowledge, character, and faith, so that they can better represent Christ.

Ephesians 6:20 (AMP): "For which I am an ambassador in chains; and pray that in proclaiming it I may speak boldly and courageously, as I should."

Paul’s words remind us that even in difficult circumstances, we are to represent Christ with boldness and courage.

Relevance to Today’s Believers: For today’s Christians, embracing the role of an ambassador for Christ is vital. In a world often filled with division and confusion, believers are called to be a light, showing God’s love and truth in everything they do. Whether at work, school, or in personal relationships, the role of an ambassador is an everyday calling that requires consistency and integrity.

Knowing, understanding, and fulfilling this role is not about being perfect; it’s about being faithful. When we act as Christ’s ambassadors, we give others a glimpse of God’s love and His desire for reconciliation. This role is both a privilege and a responsibility, and it requires us to rely on God’s strength and guidance.

The Whole of What It Means to Please God

While today’s focus is on knowing, understanding, and performing the role of an ambassador, this role is part of the larger picture of living a life that pleases God. In previous days, we discussed making a choice to serve God, walking in Christ, and being filled with the Spirit. Embracing our role as ambassadors supports each of these principles by enabling us to live out our faith in a way that draws others to God.

To please God, we must live in a way that reflects His character, His love, and His truth. Being an ambassador for Christ is an outward expression of a heart that is fully surrendered to God. Our lives are meant to reflect Christ to the world.

Philippians 2:15-16 (AMP): "So that you may prove yourselves to be blameless and guileless, innocent and uncontaminated, children of God without blemish in the midst of a morally crooked and spiritually perverted generation, among whom you are seen as bright lights (beacons shining out clearly) in the world [of darkness], holding out and offering to everyone the word of life."

This scripture reinforces our calling to shine as lights in a dark world, offering hope and truth through our words and actions.

Summary

On this ninth day of our series, we explored the importance of knowing, understanding, and performing our role as Christ’s ambassadors. 2 Corinthians 5:20 reminds us that God makes His appeal through us, calling others to be reconciled to Him. Being an ambassador for Christ is a calling that applies to every believer, regardless of their profession or position. It requires a commitment to reflect Christ in our actions, words, and attitudes, demonstrating His love to those around us.

Pleasing God involves living as His representative, sharing His message of reconciliation with the world. This role is not limited to certain moments or places; it is an ongoing commitment that shapes every part of our lives. As we continue in this series, let today’s focus on being an ambassador encourage you to embrace this role fully, knowing that God is using you to reach others and to reveal His love.
