Ukraine has been suffering a brutal invasion for already 900 days. At an immense human cost, we have been resisting and fighting bravely against a dictatorship that is employing an enormous amount of resources to conquer our territory—a resistance that would never have been possible without our friends and allies from NATO, and especially the United States.
Our destinies are intertwined at a critical point, which is precisely our survival as a country and a people. So it's completely admissible that presidential elections in any of the countries that compose our alliance of supporters may have a direct effect on the dynamics of this relationship. And it's natural that we have been following the news across the Atlantic with heightened interest.
The elections will take place in just three months. A couple of weeks, and our destinies will be sealed. After a lot of extensive thinking and reflection about whether it would be appropriate to declare my own preference as a foreign citizen, I reached the conclusion that there's no big deal. After all, democracy is a universal value, which exists independently of where we are and who we are. Not to mention that we are fighting so hard to build our own democracy in Ukraine.
And please, friends, this is not an attempt to interfere in your national process. It's strictly a personal opinion from someone in Ukraine, completely unrelated to any of the candidates and not associated in any way with any party or organization. I'm not a paid agent and never will be, unlike what so many who have come to my blog have accused me of in the past.
Having said all of that, let me say that I couldn't think anything other than to massively support Kamala Harris. And this is the opinion of virtually everyone I meet in several Ukrainian regions.
It's not necessary to talk much about the alternative. The guy in the red cap has already shown his lack of respect for so many people that it's really hard to understand how he still has a base of voters. Everyone has already been the target of his rudeness, including many world leaders, his own daughters, and also, so many times, this country I will forever fight for the right to call home.
Only by being the successor of Joe Biden and the current vice president would she be our natural choice of preference. Biden is a leader who has made matters involving Ukraine his highest priority, and he understands that the future of democracy and freedom in the whole world depends on the outcomes in this country. Ukraine may be far away on the map, but destiny has made us critical to the freedom of people living many thousands of miles and kilometers away.
But Kamala has qualities that go beyond the fact she was Biden's VP. She has a unique blend of leadership, vision, and experience to address the domestic problems of America and project the nation towards a world where peace, justice, and understanding will be the norm. She has the ability to bring people together and the courage to engage in tough discussions while being firm on the non-negotiable principles of civilization, yet respectful enough to seek common ground and establish consensus on critical subjects.
Talking about Ukraine, she has long been on the side of the Ukrainian people. She understands what is at stake here, and she is already actively discussing with leaders from all over the world the unwavering support for this country. She knows why it's so important to secure democracy and freedom in the world.
Kamala said the day after the invasion in 2022: "All eyes around our country and the world are on Russia's invasion of Ukraine. I want to be clear that this is a war of choice. It is unprovoked, it is unwarranted, and it is unjustified." Together with President Biden, she was instrumental in securing Ukraine's access to F-16s, and the first jets have officially arrived in Ukraine in recent weeks. As President, she will continue President Biden’s strategy of strengthening NATO and Ukraine.
Her choice of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate is also a testament to her commitment to Ukraine. Walz is a long-time supporter of Ukraine, who, at the beginning of the invasion, signed a law requiring his state to cease doing business with Russia. He also officially declared that every February 24 will always be Solidarity Day With Ukraine in Minnesota, as a way to never forget the day Russia broke all international laws and started this disaster we live today.
Do you know the other candidate's opinions about NATO and Ukraine? There's no need to comment on them. But his choice for vice once said, “I don’t really care what happens to Ukraine one way or another.”
We must persist in bolstering security, achieving significant outcomes, and enhancing our resilience against Russian aggression in Ukraine and beyond. We must show Putin that his disdain for humanity and freedom will never defeat our unity. The unity of the free world.
Kamala Harris is a politician who has been consistent in her support for Ukraine. Not only the people of Ukraine but the people of the United States of America too.
We must continue to stand together—Ukraine, America, and all of our partners—because we have a common goal, we have common values. We have a bright future to share and to celebrate.
And this future is only possible with Kamala Harris.
