4th of July and the privilege to celebrate it ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Jul 04, 2022

Feeling part of a nation is an elementary idea of every person in the world since at least two centuries ago. A nation is an instiutional body roughly defined as an union of people of common descent, history, language and shared interests. On our age of civilization, it is completely natural the self-identification within a country and it comes to the sense that every human belongs to a community.

Not susprisingly, the Universal Declaration of the Human Rights establishes that the right of nationality is a basic right to every person, certainly at the same extent the right of self-determination and respect is a fundamental right of every nation.

As someone who comes from an nation that had their own existence categorically denied by a neighboring country, the same who is ruled by a dictator who denies the very reality of the nationhood, serving himself of insanely fake theories to justify everything and having the wide approval of their internal public, I encourage every American citizen to celebrate this 4th of July with all the deepness of the heart.

I could write this appeal based on my strong admiration to the United States and to its commitment to freedom, to justice and to democracy along its history. The States certainly have been through many imperfections in the journey as a nation, but the respect to the idea of democracy is, at least for me, the categorical factor that makes the USA such a great country it is today.

I could also develop the appeal of celebration thinking on all my thankfulness to the support in our fight against Russia. Without the help of the American authorities and specially the American people, always leading the huge coalition of countries on our side, we would very likely be engulfed by the Russian terror as of the time of this writing.

I would probably not be alive to write this for you and my nation would likely ceased to exist for the next decades or maybe centuries if followed the historic logic of Russian opression.

Today, it is fair to assume I still have a nation to fight for because of the United States of America. I discovered that having a nation is not only a right, but a privilege.

Celebrating our nation's day does not mean we decline to have a critical stance or that we agree with the current state of things. It's much more a matter of praising who we are, what we have built and how we will proceed forward as an active member of the society.

As a Ukrainian, I could feel the danger of being deprived of my own nation, a nightmare that still frightens us every night and I just don't want no one to feel.

Celebrate, my American friends. Just leave politics aside today and remember not only the great nation you are, but the privilege of having a nation.

Happy 4th of July!
