A Poem for the Mom's Carrying Too Much

A Poem for the Mom's Carrying Too Much

Sep 01, 2026

I know we can all agree this current economic model is crushing many of us. Some more than others.

Each month my debt goes up because I do not have the support I and my daughter need and deserve from the other household member. Yeah, I said it. It's the truth. And I'm done carrying this level.

Kids grow. They need clothes.

School supplies.

Debt is consuming me.

The pressure I have been under to DO to CHANGE to FIX to FIGURE OUT.

Today things just crashed all around me until in one moment of pure exhaustion, I just surrendered it all. Then an image came to me. Virginia Woolf. Pockets full of rocks, wading into the water, letting the current take her away. Only in my story, there is a different ending.

For after the image came these words.

A story. A poem. Where in the end, the mom doing her best breaks through. Love enters. She gets the help she needs. The REST she needs.

And deserves.

No one should have to walk alone.

Especially moms.

For without mom's, there is no US.

The weight of life, slowly filling up past her quivering chin,
A quiet flood in her mind of papers, bills, to-do's and debt.
She wears a smile to keep the hope of relief within,
And dries her eyes so no one outside sees they are wet.

She carries mountains in that fragile chest,
The heavy weight of being everything.
No time to break, no hour to truly rest,
While praying that the frayed-out ropes will continue to cling.

Her mind is racing like a midnight train,
An endless loop of what do I do now? can I make this last?
Emotionally spent, numb to the pain,
She holds her breath, ready to release herself from the burdens of the past.

Slowly, she sinks beneath the surface of the day,
Convinced that no one sees her going under.
She lets the heavy current have its way,
Too tired now to fight the growing loudness of the storm of thunder.

But then, a hand breaks through the chill of the dark,
A sudden grip around her sinking wrist.
Someone was watching, seeing her fading spark,
And pulled her up out of the heavy mist.

Taking the burden from her shaking hands,
They gently whispered, "You don't have to carry this alone."
Upon the solid earth she, refreshed and New, finally stands,
No longer forced to face the isolation of that deep unknown.
