✈️ I Tried to Check In With Ryanair After Using Opodo — Here's What They Don’t Tell You Until It's Too Late.
By Velian Krav - 27/07/2025
Let me take you on a short journey — not through the skies, but through the digital labyrinth of modern airline bureaucracy. This is not a story about a flight. It’s a story about a trap — hidden in plain sight, and ready to waste your time, energy, and peace of mind.
I booked a Ryanair ticket through Opodo. Simple, right? Wrong.
🚧 Step 1: The Invisible Wall — "Virtual Email"
When you book via Opodo (or other third-party sites), they don’t use your email to register the flight with Ryanair. They create a virtual email like [email protected] — a ghost address you have zero access to.
Why? Because Ryanair hates third-party bookings. But rather than blocking them outright, they’ve built a trapdoor system. Your booking exists, but your control over it? Gone.
🧱 Step 2: The Verification Vortex
Ryanair forces you to verify your identity through a special Verification Hub. Sounds fine — until you realise:
You need a camera and a passport
You must submit facial recognition (optional paid version for €0.59)
And after doing it all, they send the confirmation email to... the virtual email 🤯
Yes, the one you can’t access. So even though you’re verified, you’re locked out of your own flight.
🌀 Step 3: The Customer Service Carousel
Now begins the real journey: begging Ryanair’s customer service to update your email. The bot ignores your messages. The agent repeats scripted lines. You repeat yourself 5 times. Then… maybe… a human finally listens.
You must:
Prove you’re the passenger
Demand they update the email to your real one
Get confirmation that verification will be finalized hours later
And pray nothing breaks in the meantime
💸 Time Lost, Trust Broken
All this to do what used to take 2 minutes:
Get your boarding pass
Check in online
Know your own flight details
Instead, you're now:
Wasting hours in live chats
Frustrated by anti-customer systems
Paying for optional identity tools to fix a problem you didn’t cause
This isn’t customer service. It’s customer control.
🚨 This Isn’t Just a One-Time Error — It’s a Pattern
Let’s be clear. Ryanair built this process deliberately.
Opodo built theirs too.
You, the traveler, are caught between two companies playing email ping-pong — and both blame each other while you suffer the consequences.
🛡️ We Need Clear Rules — Not Corporate Maze Games
Why isn’t this illegal yet?
No booking service should use a virtual email without explicit consent
No airline should withhold access to your own booking
No company should be allowed to force facial recognition or block check-in behind paywalls
This isn’t innovation. It’s manipulation.
It’s time we demand that online services be rebuilt for humans — not loopholes, data grabs, or anti-competitive games. Travel should be stressful because of airports or delays — not because you’re stuck in a Kafkaesque chatbot hell over your own flight.
