How Scents Connect Us to Our Roots

Sep 03, 2023

Though I no longer attend church services, the memories of this small United Methodist church are still dear to me. In this story I tell a tale of my time machine pantry. The scent of my pantry transports me back to days filled with the warmth of community and the fragrance of faith.

Have you ever been transported to a different time and place by a simple scent? The sense of smell is surprisingly powerful, with the ability to evoke long-forgotten memories. In this story, I share how the smell inside my pantry takes me back to a small Methodist church in small-town, Alabama where I spent many of my childhood days with my grandmother.

As I open the pantry door, I’m instantly transported to that familiar place. The aroma of old wooden floors, potlucks, and old ladies’ perfumes wafts out to me, enveloping me in an olfactory embrace so strong that I can almost see myself sitting in the pews with my grandmother, listening to her sing … “I come to the garden alone”.

If those wooden floors could talk, I wonder what stories they’d tell. Every creak tells a tale of generations who’ve walked these same steps, their hopes and dreams echoing in the grain of the wood. The floors, even then, were weathered and worn. I can recall a few patches that had turned a shade different from years of faithful service.

I close my eyes, breathe in, and linger just a little longer.

I can almost taste the history, a taste that’s a mix of reverence and community. It’s like each scuff and scratch holds a memory, each dent evidence to the countless souls who found solace and strength on those sacred planks of wood.

But the aroma isn’t just the floors; it’s a potluck of memories. It’s the warm, hearty fragrance of Sunday gatherings, where the air was thick with the scent of Southern delicacies. Think crispy fried chicken, earthy collard greens, fluffy cornbread, and bubblin’ peach cobbler. Each dish had its own tale to tell, and together, they offered mouthwatering fellowship.

And then there’s the pulpit and the pews, where the scent of polished wood and furniture wax blended in harmony. The wood, well-worn by countless hands resting upon it in prayer, bore the marks of devotion. The furniture wax, with its faint lemony scent, was like a promise of care, a reminder that this place, with its polished elegance, was a sanctuary of love and faith.

I start wondering if my wife is wondering why I’m hanging out in the pantry but the memories beckon me and I stay.

Back to this magical aroma … the scent also includes delicate whispers of the church ladies’ perfumes. They float like fragrant secrets, a medley of floral notes that range from the delicate sweetness of roses to the heady richness of gardenias. It’s as if the air itself carried their love and kindness, embracing every soul in that small church.

The power of scent to unearth memories isn’t some quirk; it shows our brain’s marvelous complexity. Smells have a direct line to the part of our minds that stirs up emotions and memories, stirring them up like a good ol’ Southern pot of black-eyed peas. That’s why the mere whiff of a certain flower can transport you back to childhood or the scent of cornbread dressing can conjure images of snug family gatherings.

Sometimes, a reminiscent scent can be a salve for the soul.

For me, our pantry’s nostalgic scent is like a roadmap to my roots, a compass guiding me back to the lessons learned in that little Methodist church. It reminds us how smells can tether us to our past, stir deep emotions, and help us remember who we are and where we come from.

So, the next time an all-too-familiar scent whisks you away on a time-travelin’ adventure, embrace it… close your eyes and linger a little longer. Savor the enchantment of how smells can rekindle memories, and let them lead you down a path through the good ol’ days, complete with the well-worn tales of those wooden floors, the savory notes of Sunday lunches, and the polished elegance of cherished pulpit memories.
