From Presents to Presence: How Christmas ...

From Presents to Presence: How Christmas Reminded Me What Truly Matters

Dec 31, 2023

I woke up this morning feeling like Santa himself had stuffed my heart with gratitude nuggets.

  • Roof over my head? Check.

  • Cozy cuddle zone for 14 family members? Yep, even with Tetris-level maneuvering!

  • Piles of presents that took two hours to unwrap? (Seriously, my family must be stockpiling gifts since last Christmas!)

It's easy to get caught up in the glittery chaos of Christmas, especially when surrounded by mountains of wrapping paper and enough food to feed a small reindeer herd. But then I think about folks out there who spent yesterday without a single gift, a warm meal, or even a roof over their heads.

Reality check, right?

Sure, we scarfed down enough food to fuel a marathon, laughed over the funny old memories and created funny new memories, and listened to Christmas music all day. But the real joy came from having my whole crazy (in the best way) family crammed together, spreading holiday cheer like festive confetti. Not everyone has that, and it hit me like a ton of gingerbread bricks.

So hear me out: practicing gratitude isn’t a fancy schmancy thing.

It's about appreciating the little things, the stuff we often take for granted. The sight of twinkling lights, the sound of laughter, the deliciousness of a home-cooked feast – these things are freaking miracles, y'all!

Gratitude turns your frown upside down faster than a hot chocolate can melt away stress.

So challenge yourself this holiday season:

  • Find the good, the goofy, the heartwarming, and shout it from the rooftops (metaphorically, please, the neighbors might call the cops).

  • And don't forget to tell the peeps who make your life awesome how much you appreciate them. After all, a heartfelt "thanks" is the ultimate stocking stuffer.

Christmas is about more than presents and visions of sugarplums (although those are pretty rad too). It's about counting our blessings, big and small, and sharing that warm fuzzy feeling with everyone around us.

So spread the gratitude cheer, and have a holly, jolly, ridiculously grateful holiday season!

P.S. Don't judge me if I eat Christmas cookies for breakfast.
