💧 When the Sky Broke Open: Remembering the DANA in 2024, Preparing for Tomorrow

One year after the devastating DANA that took the lives of 229 people in the province of Valencia, we continue to ask ourselves: what has changed and have we learned? 💔

When you build a life somewhere — whether over generations or just a few months — you inherit its stories.

Its joys.

Its fears.

Its strength.

Its sadness.

Here in Valencia, one story still lives close to the surface:

the day the DANA arrived.

On October 29, 2024, a sudden and violent storm tore through towns across the province.

Within hours, entire streets disappeared underwater.

Families were separated.

229 lives were taken far too soon.

For many, that day feels like yesterday.

🌧️ What is a DANA ?

“DANA” stands for Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos — a cut-off low pressure system high in the atmosphere.

It’s not just a big storm.

It’s a collision of forces:

Cold air trapped above us.

Warm, heavy Mediterranean moisture rising from the sea.

Mountains that block the clouds from escaping.

And then, suddenly…

Rain falls faster than the earth can hold.

Faster than warnings can spread.

Faster than rescue can arrive.

That is a DANA.

💙 Why we remember

The people lost were neighbors, parents, children, beginners, storytellers — lives full of future.

Homes weren’t just damaged:

they were the pages of people’s histories, washed away.

Valencia cried that day.

And still, it breathes through healing.

🤝 Why we talk about this — especially now

This week marks one year since the storm.

Across the province, you may see:

• Flowers placed at memorials

• New trees being planted

• Moments of silence in town squares

• Conversations in schools and homes

These aren’t ceremonies of fear.

They are gestures of solidarity.

Of belonging.

Of hope growing in the soil of loss.

🌱 If you are new here…

You may not remember the storm —

but you can help shape what comes next.

Your awareness makes the community stronger.

Your preparation keeps families safer.

Your compassion brings comfort where wounds remain.

Being here means this is your story too —

not one of tragedy, but of resilience.

🌍 What we do now matters

We honor those we lost

by protecting those who are here.

By learning from the water.

By respecting the land.

By planting what can grow again.

Because memory is not only what we look back on — it’s what we build forward.

We learned that nature does not wait, that prevention saves more than reaction, and that human solidarity remains our greatest strength.

But we also see that there is still much to be done: real planning, resilient infrastructure, respect for the land, and a deeper collective awareness of climate change.

May this anniversary not be only a remembrance of pain, but also a reminder of our shared responsibility.

Because next time — and there will be a next time — we must be prepared, united, and aware. 🌍💙

🤍 This week of memory and action:

  • In València, tributes have been held with moments of silence and an emotional civic ceremony alongside victims’ associations.

  • In Xàtiva, this Wednesday, October 29 at 12:00, the Town Hall is calling for five minutes of silence in front of the Casa de la Ciutat (portaldexativa.es).

🕊️ But it is not enough. Remembering alone is not enough.

We must act, prevent, educate, care — and do it together.

What can you do? 🌱

  • Bring a flower to Paiporta, in memory of the victims.

  • Plant a small tree in Aldaia, a symbol of life and hope.

  • Talk with your children, your neighbors, your students about what happened — and how we can be better prepared.

  • Support those who are still rebuilding their lives.

💧 May every action, no matter how small, help us remember and rebuild — with respect, awareness, and community.

💧

From water and sorrow, let life be born again.

May every flower remember a name,

every root hold a story,

and every new tree keep a promise —

to never forget.

🌱

May the earth heal,

may memory bloom,

and may we sow hope —

together.

Hace falta actuar, prevenir, educar, cuidar — y hacerlo juntos.

¿Qué puedes hacer tú? 🌱

no olvidar.

🌱 Que la tierra sane,

que la memoria florezca,

y que juntos sembremos esperanza.
