Everyone has one. Even if you think your backstory is boring, it’s not. Your backstory is the impression that helped form who you are today!
If you aren’t convinced that your backstory is special, let me ask you a question: do you have anyone that loves you? A best friend, significant other, or even your parents? Yes, don’t give me that look, parental love counts. Well, if you do, then your backstory matters. It even matters when you don’t believe there is anyone in all existence who loves you. Your past, present, and future describe who you are or will be -- and that matters.
Have you ever taken pen-to-page to describe those moments that broke you, moved you, and shaped you? If you have, I commend you because I know that doing so can be an emotionally daunting task.
If you haven’t I ask that you give it a try. I’ll wait…
So? How did it go? Was it easy? Difficult?
Now, try doing that but for a fictional character. This is a person that will never exist and may experience things that may be impossible. They too are formed by the past and present. Their motivations, desires, future decisions, and development start here, in their backstory.
I intend to write backstories for such fictional characters and I would like to offer them to you! They can be adapted for short stories, comics, your Dungeons & Dragons campaign, or whatever you wish for them to be used for.
