Hello there, friends! 🐻✨

While traveling to the Czech Republic 🚅, I not only learned basic greetings and numbers from 1️⃣ to 🔟 but also expanded my vocabulary related to сім'я (family) 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦.

Here’s what I already knew:

  • тітка (aunt) 👩‍🦰

  • мати (mother) / мама (mom) 🤱

  • дід (grandfather) 👨‍🦳

And here’s the new vocabulary I learned:

  • дочка / донька (daughter) 👩‍👧

  • син (son) 👩‍👦

  • батько (father) / тато (dad) 👨

  • бабуся (grandmother) 👵

  • дідусь (grandfather) 👨‍🦳

  • дядько (uncle) 🧔‍♂️

  • брат (brother) 👦

  • сестра (sister) 👧

Now I can introduce my family using the word це (this is):

  • Це моя сестра. (This is my sister.)

  • Це мій брат. (This is my brother.)

  • Це моя бабуся. (This is my grandmother.)

  • Це мій дідусь. (This is my grandfather.)

Have you noticed these words: моя and мій? They are the first Ukrainian possessive pronouns I learned! Why are they different, you might ask? It turns out that also the possessive pronouns in Ukrainian change their forms depending on the gender of the following noun.

Therefore моя is followed by feminine nouns (like бабуся), while мій is followed by masculine nouns (like дідусь).

But wait, there is also a third form - моє. This one is followed by neuter nouns (like ім'я).

See you next time! 🐻💫
