A little sneak peak of Chapter 1

A little sneak peak of Chapter 1

May 01, 2024

With each passing day, Ben's initial excitement about their North Korean adventure began to wane, replaced by a growing sense of unease and apprehension. The constant surveillance, the carefully orchestrated itinerary, and the omnipresent propaganda created an atmosphere of stifling control, making it increasingly difficult to relax and enjoy the experience.

Jamie, on the other hand, remained largely unfazed by the oppressive atmosphere. He was still the same enthusiastic traveller who had eagerly anticipated this trip, fascinated by the country's unique culture and history. He seemed oblivious to the subtle cues of surveillance and the underlying tension that permeated every aspect of their interactions.

Ben, however, couldn't shake off the feeling that their every move was being monitored. Even in the privacy of their hotel room, he couldn't escape the lingering suspicion that their conversations were being recorded. The idea, once dismissed as far-fetched, now seemed increasingly plausible in the context of a regime that controlled every aspect of its citizens' lives.

The constant state of alert was exhausting, taking a toll on Ben's physical and emotional well-being. He found himself constantly on edge, his senses heightened to every nuance of their surroundings. The simple act of engaging in casual conversation with Jamie felt fraught with risk, as he couldn't be sure if their words were being overheard or misinterpreted.

The final day of their trip brought a visit to the International Friendship Exhibition in Myohyangsan, a museum dedicated to showcasing the vast collection of gifts bestowed upon Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un by foreign dignitaries. Ben approached the exhibition with a mixture of fascination and morbid curiosity.

As he wandered through the halls, his eyes widened at the sheer extravagance and absurdity of the displays. Dead animals, from crocodile-skin briefcases to ivory lions and tiger claws, were presented as tokens of friendship, their macabre presence a stark reminder of the regime's disregard for life.

Amidst the ostentatious displays of wealth and power, Ben's gaze fell upon a polar bear skin, its once pristine white fur now stained with a crimson hue. A blood-red cushion cradled the bear's head, its menacing grin a chilling symbol of the regime's ruthlessness.

A wave of nausea washed over Ben as he took in the scene. The absurdity and cruelty of the gift epitomized everything he had come to despise about the North Korean regime. It was a stark reminder that behind the carefully crafted facade of friendship and diplomacy lay a dark and oppressive reality.

As they left the exhibition, Ben felt a profound sense of relief. The weight of constant surveillance and the suffocating atmosphere of control had lifted, replaced by the anticipation of returning to the normalcy and freedom of their home. Their North Korean adventure was over, leaving behind a trail of unsettling memories and a newfound appreciation for the liberties they had taken for granted.
