My first solo adventure outside of Canada was to hike the Wicklow Way in Ireland.
The trail starts in Marlay Park in Dublin (and a good 20 minute bus ride from Temple Bar). The trail dips, climbs and winds 130 KMs through the Wicklow Mountains, through parks, fields, beautiful little towns and villages - all before coming to an end in Clonegal.
But that's not really the end of the line. See, Clonegal is a very small village that has no real form of public transportation, nor is there really anywhere to hang your hat (or backpack) for the evening. So instead, most trekkers will opt to stay in Bunclody which adds another 6 KMs to the end of an already long day as most hikers stay at the Dying Cow Pub - 26 KMs away.
The Dying Cow is a beautiful and tiny little pub in the middle of nowhere that offers a strip of grass for tents, an octagonal roofed shed (for the first to arrive and use it if they wish to do so) and a few glamping pods (which I happily upgraded to). The Dying Cow was a warm and welcoming site with hot pizza on the menu and cold brew on tap (naturally I stuck with Guinness!).
Luckily the host at my accommodations in Bunclody offered to come pick me up once I reached the end of my 6 day journey - which was a good thing because I was wiped!
