"Is One Person "More Spiritual" Than Another?

Feb 11, 2024

When you think of spiritual things, what do you think of? Specific types of physical movements including yoga, mudras, dance, and meditation; dietary practices such as vegan, fasting, abstaining from specific foods and beverages, intaking and avoiding food at certain times of day or specific days and holidays; vocal presentations consisting of chanting, preaching, praying aloud in groups, singing, and speaking certain verses from "holy books"; wearing certain types of clothing, driving certain types of vehicles or none at all, hair-styles and facial hair grooming, symbolic jewelry and tattoos, methods of healing, contemplating over unseen realms and the practices and establishments of ancient cultures, and so many more things that are associated with "being a spiritual person".

My view reaches outside of the stereotypes that exist in society of which we have come to know of by their names, be it the name of a religion or a practice of some sort. Among the reasons people adopt one of the stereotypical "spirituality packages" include wanting to develop new insights through deeper inner experiences which would enable them to grow by expanding their views and opening to new ideas and philosophies, cultural differences, dietary practices, healing methods, and a strong desire to have soulful communication with a source outside of themselves. This could occur when someone has become too familiar with their ways and beliefs and is feeling empty. It could occur when they are seeking answers of some kind and haven't come close to finding them in their usual surroundings. There are many reasons why people explore and adopt new ways. While some will say that such a person has changed and is now a different person altogether, I tend to phrase this thought as though a person has become more aware of balancing the inherent aspects of themselves, since the spiritual aspect is a major part of each person, and someone who has given attention to this part of themselves in a realistic way (not a superficial way such as a structured outline to follow -*more on this in a moment) has given the job of accomplishing this balancing a worthwhile effort - from which real results have occurred. By "real results" I mean results that have brought the person to a better place within themselves. To me, this basic idea is the most important reason to turn to the spiritual part of oneself, because one's outlook on everything that exists will be different when one has a close inner connection to the spiritual part of their core self.

It is not a matter of a person "being spiritual", it is a matter of a person having a harmony with their body, mind, and spirit. A person does not become a more spiritual person, but becomes more aware of the spiritual aspect within themself. In doing so, people may say that they are more spiritual by using the analogy that just as you give attention to the health and fitness of your body, you become healthier and more fit; just as you give attention to the progress of your education, you become more educated; just as you give attention to your spiritual aspect, you become more spiritual. I see it as becoming more spiritually aware. The reason for this is that spirituality is not a physical formation, it is, indeed, an awareness. So a person is not more spiritual than another, they are simply more spiritually aware on a more consistent basis.

Each of us has a strong spiritual aspect within, yet many pathways do nothing to connect us to it. They teach rules instead. Rules, such as family structure, dietary conditions, wardrobe and attire, and specific thoughts their followers are to adopt concerning certain things because they teach certain ways of thinking right down to specific thoughts they want engrained into the minds of their followers. They follow the rules and still don't feel a connection to their spirit, but they'll often believe that they have the right answer by being associated with that so-called spiritual path and they lower their expectations because of the thought that they have gained the approval of a power that has deemed their spirit worthy. So where's the spirituality when it isn't in the confines of any meetings they attend and literature they've been given? They let it bypass because of the belief that they have attained something that is, in effect, an imaginary something, and not the real experience that accompanies anyone who has a connection to their inner core.

With so much information having come into the forefront about ancient religions and societies, with their practices relating to virginity, birth, puberty, adolescents, marriage ceremonies, all the way to death and burial, and art forms, architectural structures, mathematical applications, clothing, dance, music, and so forth, these things may serve us now to bring us closer to understanding the various ways people identified with the society in which they lived. They do not, however, bring us closer to connecting with the spiritual part of our own core that exists within.

Spirituality, however, is not a solid thing but is rather a living thing that moves. Going back to the body, our bodies are meant to change and not to stay the same all the time. Our bodies are affected by the spiritual part of us. And so are our minds. For any path to instruct on how the body and mind are to specifically be without addressing a direct connection to one's inner spiritual core - but rather telling them to look outward, or to intellectualize the pathway to spirituality, is to absolutely avoid any possibility of them connecting with their inner spiritual core - placing upon them a dependency to the leader or the society who is presenting such ideas.

So, the question as to whether one person is more "spiritual" than another, is not that they are, but is that they have developed a connection with their own inner peace.
