To be or nor to be historian edition

Nov 05, 2024

Today a bit of insight into the propaganda and biases I need to fight everyday.

I AM a full time historian. But the reality is that a lot of people, particularly other people in the world of academia, don't consider this to be a legitimate way of being a historian.

Because I don't spend time on dusty archives or university lecture rooms. Because I spend more time preparing video essays and public talks than academic papers that only 1% of people will ever read. Or because I spend my time writing for you guys instead.

The world of tour guiding is cut throat. The world of the academic humanities isn't better. I talked abundantly about this on the podcast I invited you all on Sunday and sadly, many of my archaeology peers felt the same.

I don't necessarily want to turn this into a political post but considering the date this is in historical dates of the UK and what is occurring in the USA, I beg everyone reading this to THINK humanities and arts first. This doesn't mean to not think science or technology or development or finance.

But our society will only survive this way. By people like me being "fake historians" trying to fix the world where the people are.

Love to you all. And if November the 5th means anything to you.. Remember, remember...
