Tommy the Cat passed in December of 2025 and is survived by his sister, Tabitha (also a cat), and their two humans, both of whom are middle-aged, disabled, neurodivergent, white, queer, and impoverished.

Tommy the Cat was a midnight-yowling, underbed-prowling, fur-knotting, treat-begging, sister-annoying, curmudgeonly lovable rogue. He is missed.
Tabitha is a fuzzbutt snugglemuffin purrball, who, when younger, would climb on your lap, meow when you stop petting her, and smack you (and everything around you) with her built-in feather duster. She now spends her days napping on laps, beds, and chairs, in between oral and topical medications, medicated meals, and subcutaneous fluid infusions. We do not expect her to survive the year, but she's continuing to surprise us with her energy and zest for life.
The home human is the longer term cat carer, a professional musician, a former graphic information specialist for geographic information systems, a holder of one bachelors and two masters degrees, an earner of a small and irregular below-poverty income, and a depressed and anxious human whose immune system goes overboard and attacks the body it’s supposed to be protecting unless it is regularly purposefully weakened. They are being treated for a lot of things, and have a Disability claim in progress.
The taller human is the primary photographer and social media manager for the kitties, has been determined by the US government to be too disabled to be expected to find work (even with reasonable accommodations), is on a fixed poverty-level income, enjoys taking and sharing photographs, needs both routine and novelty in order to function, and—without significant outside assistance—is unable to build and stick to routines or gather the motivation to do something new. They have been diagnosed with a lot of things, but are being treated for only a couple, and won their Disability claim a handful of years ago.

The families of the humans provide some help. We’re not in danger of losing our housing or having utilities turned off. However, we can’t sustain ourselves forever on what we’ve got. And the veterinary expenses for our remaining elderly cat continue to add up, costing a minimum of $200 a month.
