The Weight of Silence

imageI write because people are being trampled—crushed beneath the weight of a system rigged against them, suffocating under the boot heel of corruption, waiting for justice that never comes. I write because the world is a cracked highway at dawn, slick with oil and desperation, with a storm rolling in fast and nowhere to run.

I write because power hoards and exploits, because billionaires sip cocktails in penthouses while single mothers ration groceries, deciding which bill can go unpaid this month. Because wages inch forward while rent explodes upward, because the wealth of the powerful is built on the backs of the ones they ignore. I write because the American Dream has been repackaged as a luxury item—dangling just out of reach, for sale to those who can afford it.

I write for Indigenous peoples still fighting for stolen lands, screaming into the void while corporations bulldoze history for profit. I write because their voices echo across centuries of betrayal, because treaties are nothing but lies wrapped in legalese, because rivers run thick with poison where sacred waters once flowed clean. I write for water protectors standing in defiance, watching bulldozers crawl toward their land like mechanical beasts hungry to devour.

I write for Black and Brown communities navigating a rigged game, where the house always wins and the cops are just the enforcers of the scam. I write because racism isn’t a wound that healed—it’s a gasoline fire burning through the fabric of society, raging in courtrooms, city streets, and ballots stuffed with empty promises. I write because I’ve watched a teenager tense up in a store, knowing they’ll be followed, because I’ve heard parents teach their kids how to survive encounters with police like it’s a skill they shouldn’t have to learn.

I write for the LGBTQ+ community—every person who has had to fight for the right to love, to exist, to breathe without fear. I write because identity should never be a battlefield, but the war rages on, fueled by politicians lighting match after match, my hoping to watch the world burn in division and hate. I write because queer kids are being told they don’t exist, because gender is being legislated by those who wouldn’t know an ounce of empathy if it cracked them across the jaw. I write because behind every headline attacking trans rights, there’s a real person staring at their reflection, wondering if the world will ever let them be whole.

I write because the planet is dying in slow motion—choking on plastic, drowning in oil, inhaling the exhaust fumes of greed. I write because billionaires jet between mansions, sipping champagne as the forests smolder, as the oceans rise, as the earth screams. I write because they tell us to recycle while they dig for profit in the carcass of a world they’re killing. I write because the sky turns red from wildfires, because the air tastes like soot, because the ground cracks under the heat of a planet pushed past its breaking point.

I write for the workers caught in a machine that runs on their sweat and blood, grinding them down like gears in an engine they’ll never own. I write for the young people locked out of democracy, the students drowning in debt, the couples staring at housing prices like a wildfire tearing through their future. I write because they were told that hard work would get them ahead—only to find out the ladder was rigged, the door was locked, and the dream was sold to the highest bidder.

I write for women whose rights are signed away with ink and corruption, for immigrants hunted by bureaucracy, for refugees running from wars they did not start. I write because healthcare is treated like a luxury, because medication is priced higher than rent, because life-saving treatment is denied unless you can pay. I write because I’ve heard someone say, “I’ll just wait until it gets worse,” because they couldn’t afford to see a doctor. I write for the mother rationing insulin, for the father skipping meals so his kids can eat, for the child with a toothache that will go untreated until it becomes a crisis.

I write because silence is surrender. Because corruption festers in the halls of power like a chemical spill—spreading fast, poisoning everything it touches. I write because democracy is rigged with dynamite, waiting for the right hands to light the fuse.

I write because people are vanishing—not just from sight, but from the story of the world itself. I write for the activists silenced in the dead of night, for the journalists who dared to speak truth and paid the price, for the families searching for loved ones who were taken without explanation. I write because enforced disappearances are a weapon of fear, wielded by regimes that thrive on control and silence. I write for the voices that were stolen, for the names that were erased, for the lives turned into shadows.

I write because resistance is survival. Because Tom Joad still walks among us, whispering, “Wherever there’s a fight so hungry people can eat, I’ll be there.” And I’ll be there too—kicking over tables, throwing sparks into the darkness, refusing to let the silence win.

I write because words are fire, and the world is soaked in gasoline.

I write because the fight isn’t over.

And it never will be.
