Building upon a lifelong interest in organized crime history, I began actively researching and writing about the subject in 2002. Since that time, I've maintained and expanded the MafiaHistory.us website, launched the MobHistory Substack and participated in other online projects. I have written and co-written a number of books, including Deep Water: Joseph P. Macheca and the Birth of the American Mafia (with Martha Macheca Sheldon), DiCarlo: Buffalo’s First Family of Crime (with Michael A. Tona) and Wrongly Executed? The Long-Forgotten Context of Charles Sberna’s 1939 Electrocution. I contributed a history of the U.S. Mafia to Mafia: The Necessary Reference to Organized Crime. Since 2008, I have edited and published the crime history journal Informer: The History of American Crime and Law Enforcement. I have also had the honor of assisting in the work of other notable crime history authors. I was raised in the Bronx, NY, and spent many years in suburban western Connecticut. My wife and I now live in rural Vermont. We have three grown children.
