Dear friends,

This coming Friday, September 4, I'll look at myself in the mirror. I'm afraid of what I'll find there. Will I be satisfied with what I see?

40 years. That’s how many years will soon separate me from a friend who is very dear to our family. We took a walk together by the sea the other day, along the harbor at Saint-Cast-le-Guildo, not far from where I live in Brittany. I took some photos and posted this one on Unsplash. I’d like to develop my black-and-white photography skills. In a collection I created for the occasion, you can also see a photo of Combourg Castle that I took last April. Feel free to let me know what you think.

That moment with my friend was sweet and warm, punctuated by the sound of the masts of the moored boats and the comings and goings of small seabirds along the shore. Looking back on it today, I try to tell myself that this is what life is all about: fleeting moments that you have to know how to seize when they arise, or else face constant suffering.

I keep listening to the song "Tempête" by the French rapper Booba—it really moves me. The poetic power of the chorus, especially these lines:

L'individu dans le miroir (me complètе, me complète)
Ne cessera jamais d'y croire (j'me répète, j'me répète)

I don’t know if I’ll write before my birthday, or right after that day—a day that’s so important to me and yet so ordinary at the same time. I hope you won’t hold it against me.

I’m just trying to live.

But the words never leave me, so…

See you soon, and thank you so much for reading my stuff here.

Tom
