Thinking of getting out into the outdoors to experience Mother Natures' warm embrace to soak up her healing powers? If you’re planning to go further afield than your usual outing there are a few things you’ll need to take into consideration. Read on to find out more.

  • Plan ahead and pack essentials: Before heading outdoors, it's important to plan your trip and pack accordingly. Research the location you're visiting to understand the weather conditions, terrain, and any potential hazards. Pack appropriate clothing, footwear, and gear. For instance, if you're going hiking, make sure to have sturdy hiking boots, moisture-wicking clothing, and layers to adapt to changing weather. Don't forget essentials like sunscreen, insect repellent, a map or GPS device, a fully charged phone, and any necessary medications.

  • Stay hydrated and fuel up: Spending time outdoors can be physically demanding, so it's crucial to stay hydrated and properly nourished. Carry an adequate supply of water and snacks that provide sustained energy. Trail mix, energy bars, and dried fruits are good options. If you're planning a longer outing, consider bringing a portable water filter in case you need to refill your water supply from natural sources like streams or lakes. Dehydration can lead to fatigue and reduced cognitive function, so drink water regularly, even if you don't feel thirsty.

  • Learn basic outdoor skills and safety: Having basic outdoor skills and knowledge of safety protocols can make a significant difference in your outdoor experience. It's crucial to understand and follow the Countryside Code, Leave No Trace principles, which promote responsible outdoor ethics to minimize your impact on the environment. Additionally, familiarize yourself with local wildlife, potential risks, and emergency procedures for the area you're visiting.

  • Share your outdoor plans with someone you trust and let them know your expected return time in case of emergencies. It is also good practice to download the What Three Words app onto your phone to help emergency services find you quicker should you need assistance.

A word about dogs around livestock… Every year humans and farm animals get injured or killed in incidents, usually involving dogs. It is absolutely vital when taking your furry friends out with you that you keep them on a lead and under control especially when walking through livestock fields.

Remember, you are there to enjoy yourself in the fresh air and keeping the above-mentioned points in mind will make it even for enjoyable.

Have fun and stay safe!
